What are the procedures to apply for a ham radio licence?
A ham radio licence can be obtained after passing
the Amateur Radio Operator's Certificate Examination. Following steps
should be followed:
-Send an application (in the precribed format and the necessary
enclosures including the examination fees) to the "Wireless
Monitoring Station" (nearest to your home town) of
the Ministry of Communications to appear for the Amateur Station Operator's
Certificate (ASOC) Examination (Click here for details on
Indian Wireless Telegraphs amateur service Rules)
-The "Application Form" for the "ASOC Examination" should be
addressed to the "Officer-in-Charge" or the "Engineer-Inspection"
(whichever is applicable) of the Wireless Monitoring
Station nearest to your hometown.
-A date will be intimated to you for holding the ASOC examination.
-Appear for the examination.
-Wait for the examination result (the waiting period varies from one month to a few
months!)
-If you fail in your first attempt nothing to worry. You can apply again after one
month of when you appeared for the first time (and the process may continue till you
pass).
-After the result is declared that you have passed your ASOC examination, a copy of
the result sheet + 3 copies of your personal details (which you have enclosed in the
prescribed format when you applied for the examination) would be sent by the Wireless
Monitoring Station (not by you!) to the Assistant Wireless Adviser to the
Govt. of India, Wireless Planning & Coordination Wing, Ministry of Communications, New
Delhi.
-The Assistant Wireless Adviser will get the necessary "police
varification" (which is entirely a secret process about which you would not be
aware of!) from the concerned department/s about the "integrity of your
character".
-Once a "Green Signal" is issued by the concerned security agency, you
will be intimated by the Assistant Wireless Adviser, WPC Wing, Ministry of Communications
that you are eligible to apply for an Amateur Wireless Telegraph Station Licence
requesting you to send the "Prescribed Licence Fees" along with two copies of
photographs (size 4 x 3 cm).
-Send it
-Wait for your licence to come!
