Ham Radio during Disaster
One of the resolutions taken by the World Administrative Radio Conference,
Geneva, in 1979 says that Amateur Radio activity throughout the world should be
promoted, because in the event of a natural disaster, normal communication systems are
frequently overloaded, damaged or completely
disrupted at a time when rapid establishment of communication becomes essential
to facilitate worldwide relief actions. Under those circumstances, a greater
density and wide-spread distribution of ham radio stations can efficiently assist in
meeting the communication needs. Also in the event of a natural disaster, direct
communication between amateur radio operators and other wireless stations belonging to the
police, armed forces and para-military forces might enable vital communications to be
carried out until normal communication are restored.
