Hams in the Service of Society by my organization (National Institute of Amateur Radio)

Natural Disasters like Earthquake, Floods, Cyclones etc., strike with such ferocious periodicity, their growing rage and intensity swallow everything in the way, be it human lives, livestock, property, infrastructure. Effective Disaster Management is the most appropriate way of dealing with these catastrophes. A systematic Communication between those affected by disasters and the concerned agencies is the key to managing disasters.

Ham Radio played a vital role during several such calamities in the country. It has readily rendered invaluable services when general communications are disrupted, Hams have established second line of communication between the affected area and the concerned agencies to rescue of people, supply of essential items like water, food, medicines effectively.

Hams in India have rendered yeomen services during Uttarkashi, Latur Earthquakes, landslides, Rail, Road, Air accidents, Cyclones & floods all over the country.

Amateur Radio Movement in India

Though, the first Ham license in India was issued in 1923, the activity did not flourish due to ignorance, lack of awareness & several misconceptions, people believe that possessing wireless equipment privately is illegal. There were not many organisations or individuals promoting this activity in the country. By 1983 there were 1500 hams in the country, with NIAR playing a major role in promoting this activity the numbers increased to 6000 in 1992 further developments have seen the numbers go up to over 15000 till the end of 1998.

Even today the amateur population in India is too small compared to nearly 1.3 million in Japan and over 6.5 lakhs in US and over 50,000 in several other developed countries around the world. The world population of Hams is over 3 million. This is one of the reasons why the developed countries have excellent growth in communication infrastructure and related socio-economic development.
