BUSHCOMM

REPORTS

WORKSHOP: 2 metre Beam Assembly.  – August 2.
After a lot of preparatory work, sorting out the design, and sourcing materials, etc, AHARS finally got it all together (pun intended) for the assembly of 25 top quality antennas.
Jim (VK5JST) and Barry (VK5ZBQ) were the driving force behind this successful and important project.
Thanks to Saint John's School Belair for the use of their excellent workshop.

All had a great time at the excellent technical workshop of Saint John’s School, Belair.
Behind Barry is Wolf (FWLF), Jenny (FJAY), and Karl (right foreground, FOSS).

RECENT MEETINGS:

June – The Heart at Radio Frequency. Andrew Russell. A gifted speaker and scientist to boot, Andrew took us on a whirlwind tour of the many clever monitoring machines available to Modern Medicine. Perhaps an unintentional outcome of the talk was the understanding of just how much effort and science has to go into those machines, and hence an appreciation of why they cost so much.

July -
Display of Members' Equipment.
The usual range of interesting and useful gear was paraded by its proud owners. From a handy automatic repeater timer to a 3 KW dummy load, the presentations for all items were received with enthusiasm by those present.

August. The Weekly Broadcast.
Brian (VK5VI), from NERC, explained how the Sunday morning broadcasts are put together for our benefit. There’s a lot more to it than one would guess!
We were also pleased to have Wally and Margaret, who “splice” the various club offerings into one computer file for broadcast.

WICEN

TRAINING DAY

In preparation for Rally SA (and similar field activities), WICEN held a training day on June 1 at Glenelg Scout Hall.

W.I.A. MID-YEAR DINNER.

This very successful function was organised by Paul (VK5PH) and the WIA Advisory Board.
The venue was the Mount Osmond Golf Course clubrooms.
The food – its quality and quantity – served in splendid surroundings, made for a memorable occasion. The consensus after the lunch was “let's make this an annual affair”.

L to R: Jeanne (VK5JQ), Keith (VK5OQ), Lesley (VK5HLS), and Hans (VK5YX) battling with that challenging crossword.

Lucky cap winners: Robin (VK5ATT), Bruce (VK5FBAB), David (VK5OV), Jim (VK5JST) and Wal (VK5TW-”Tangled Whiskers”) showing off their luck.

NOTE: There are more photos of this event on the WICEN website.  http://www.sa.wicen.org.au/

RING REX!
Got some dead PC’s or other electronic stuff?
Phone Rex  on 0410 094 101.
He will pick up anything.
The good news is that most of what he picks up goes on to other lives, rather than wastefully into landfill.

OUR FINNISH SISTER CLUB.

AHARS’ Vice President (Leigh Turner, VK5KLT) visits Finland with some regularity, and whilst there, he also frequents the Tampere Radio Club, OH3NE.
Recently, he suggested that our two clubs become sister clubs, and the committee has endorsed the idea.
We have now reached the stage of mutual “sisterhood”.
Their club has its own excellent clubrooms, and an active bunch of radio and electronic enthusiasts.

Much of the innovative projects that the members create can be seen on-line at:

THE UGLY BALUN!  BUILD AN AIR WOUND 1:1 CHOKE BALUN FOR HF -
Note – this is very similar to the choke on my own G5RV. I personally don’t think that it’s really ugly – maybe just a little plain! It’s certainly worth reading up on, and adding to your dipole-type antenna if you don’t have one. The article has diagrams, photos, and an explanation of how it works, etc.
You'll need to go to:

The Integrated Circuit Celebrates its 50th Birthday
On the 12th of September the integrated circuit celebrated its 50th Birthday.

An excellent 8 minute video is on the web at:
http://www.wia.org.au/newsevents/news/2008/20080913-2/index.php
The first working integrated circuit (IC), was demonstrated on September 12, 1958 by Jack Kilby at Texas Instruments.
Now it’s in nearly everything that we use - toasters, washing machines, LED torches, motor vehicles, remote controls, hi fi, units, etc, to state the less obvious. Where would we be without it today?

MINIKITS

ALARA meets.
(ALARA = Australian Ladies Amateur Radio Association)
The Australian ALARA meet was held from September 12th to 14th in Tasmania. About seven AHARS’ YL’s - plus OM’s -  ventured south for discussions and a bit of serious fun. Following that event, many  toured the island state, risking frostbite and chilblains, but  enjoying some beautiful scenery and camaraderie.
Hans and Lesley, and Keith and Jeanne kept in contact via radio to their VK5 friends.

Soon after that, starting on October 3rd, some of our VK ladies will head off to “Jo’burg” in South Africa for their INTERNATIONAL YL MEET
http://www.sarl.org.za/public/_news/AutoArticle.asp?ArtNo=1  ).
Following that meet, many (including Christine, VK5CTY) will do an organised tour from Jo’burg down to Durban then on to Cape Town.
All of this will be in the unbeatable company of fellow amateurs – the best way to travel!

Expect a report in the December Newsletter.

SAFETY ISSUE
Some plug-in type room fresheners have been known to cause house fires. The plastic they are made from is THIN. An insurance investigator said  that in every case he’d investigated, where a freshener was believed to have caused the fire, there was nothing left to prove that the freshener had ever  existed. When the investigator looked in the wall plug of a recent house fire, the two prongs left from the plug-in were still in there.

The unit in this case is a Glade Plug-In.
It seems that there is no safety cut-out on the units.
Thanks to Ron Lloyd (VK5LOY) for this important information.

(The standards for imported items are so often well below those demanded of Australian-made units. – Ed.)

STUNNING  PUNNING  (Warning - not for the faint-hearted).
It’s not often a person of Vernier’s calliper comes along.
