For those planning to purchase a TNC, I offer the following advice on TNC selection. There is currently a hot debate on packet concerning the relative advantages of KISS and 6PACK for
TNCs. Those supporting the introduction of DAMA, for more efficient traffic control, point out, correctly in my opinion, that KISS cannot respond quickly enough when polled by the DAMA master. An explanation of the
timing requirements was given by PE1DNN on Packet and is reproduced here for download (Click here).
In my opinion, it would be wise for anybody comtemplating a TNC purchase to consider carefully whether the TNC has support for 6PACK or can be fitted with a 6PACK eprom. Currently this seems to be limited to TNC3 and
TNC2 clones, with Kantronics definitely not supporting 6PACK at this stage. There is also some doubt about some PacComm TNCs supporting 6PACK eproms. If anybody has further updates on which TNCs do or do not support
6PACK, please email me
Any information provided will be added to the list of TNCs that do support 6PACK and Flexnet and, where applicable, the source for the relevant EPROM images.
