June, 2007 - 2m rptr:
Monitored since the last visit, suddenly no issues, have not heard the voice splatter or the short bursts
suspect somebody has fixed something at the site, following the high winds and rain recently.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
May, 2007 - 2m rptr:
short noise bursts back and still getting occassions of what sounds like voice splatter on SSB,
heard it twice on a Thursday night at 5.30 and 5.45pm for a couple minutes, went up to the site,
only activity was with the RVCP, their log matched two transmissions on VHF ch.16 and ch.73 for those
two times, no HF used for those two times. Usually the RVCP use the remote TX at Nth Head to talk
on ch.16 and ch.73.
Went to site on the following Friday with a h/held so the RVCP could do some tests, we did some tests
on both the local & remote Transmitters on both ch 16 & 73 and found no problem.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
February, 2007 - 2m rptr:
still getting recording of the noise bursts from the BOM device this month.
Finally contacted the people at BOM, in their Hydrology Dept, either Kentwell, Hugh or Harold on 9296-1565
they will attend the site this week or next, to replace their transmitter.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
January, 2007 - 2m rptr:
4/1 hearing the BoM 151.500 device more often, its audio is now distinctly identifiable,
also more occurances of the HF/SSB has been heard over past 2 weeks, usually someone making an
approx 5 min QSO with the voices peaks keying the rptr usually once per day, can be several days apart.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
December, 2006 - 2m rptr:
21/12 afternoon, heard a distinct clear burst of the BoM device on 151.500, also heard SSB QSO running
for about 5 mins, presumably HF from the site.
18/12 after recording the noise bursts daily, pattern emerged, noises occur between 7am to either
8.30pm or 9.30pm daily.
13/12 the 144.800 packet node switch off, now only receiving the noise bursts which vary from
1.0 to 2.0 seconds.
6/12 tuneup done of rptr cavities, but now packet bursts being heard every 10 mins from 144.800

November, 2006 - 2m rptr:
30/11 Link pager 149.8875 fixed
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
October, 2006 - 2m rptr:
24/10 identified a match against a pager on 149.8875 operating by Link Comms
at 38 Myoora Rd, Terrey Hills.
Also, the 148.1375 pager that has been wandering up & down 2m, but mostly around 147.025 & 147.050 has
now been fixed.
17/10 pager breaking through and keying the rptr, consistently all day
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
September 2006 - 2m rptr:
This device on 148.1375 drifting down to 146.875, normally it hangs around 147.025 or 147.050
but also heard it recently on 146.925 so it still wanders occassionally and still not fixed.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
July 2006 - 2m rptr:
Was contacted by Waverly Club for information of the 148.1375 pager so they can raise interference
complaint with ACMA.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
February 2006 - 2m rptr:
contacted Waverly Club with info about the 148.1375 pager at Macquarie St which seems to spend most
of the time hovering on 147.025
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
August 4th, 2005 - 2m rptr:
pager interference has been on output for past 3 months, suddenly disappeared the other day, it
was tracked and suspect it was a pager on 148.1375 operating from Macquarie St in the city,
as from the Domain and around Macquarie St the signal is full scale. Same as occured in July 2004.
Heard at Frenchs Forest S1, very strong out at Mosman and North Sydney on the freeway.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
November 5th, 2004 - 2m rptr:
the noise bursts from August have been regular through September and October, started
looking for it during October, checked against known sources such as BOM, without any matches
at end of October went back through known devices on site and rechecked against all devices,
found a match with an RFS 1200 bps packet system on 161.400, which is beaconing in a 3 minute,
then 7 minute pattern with a 10 min cycle. Went to site to confirm it is the device on site
that keys up the 2m rptr. On 3/11 Tim VK2BT looked it over with a spec an, but cannot see the
signal on the input of the 2m rcvr. Noise floor measured at -100dBm at the rcvr, when injecting
a signal, mute opens at -20dBm, still investigating.
Also noted that BOM equipment on 151.500 has moved out of the compound and out and up into
their own fenced area near the BMX track/Equestrian area, happened sometime since Oct 2003 until now.

August 15th, 2004 - 2m rptr:
over past couple,of weeks getting random, short bursts of noise, momentarily keying the rptr
without activating the keyup timer, therfore no tail produced, except tfor this day, at approx 11:30am,
it started getting more occurances, ie every couple of seconds, to the point where it sounded like SSB
splatter, as if modulation peaks were breaking the rptr rcvr mute, it increased over a 10 min period
to where it started activating the rptrs and producing a tail and 'K' then rampled up to where it
held the rptr open for 30 seconds at a time, with white noise, two people started a QSO, and were
both being drowned out by the noise and at its peak you could hear data bursts, then it started
to ramp down in severity over the next 10 mins, then went quiet again.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
July 2004 - 2m rptr:
hearing a pager appear on the output of the 146.875, often in the morning, sometimes worse in
the afternoon, signals heard at Frenchs Forest and reports from many people, tracking it
down found it strongest in East Sydney, on the days it ocurred. Further tracking of it, found
it wandered across 2m, being found on 146.900 and also on 146.850, usually in the morning it
would be heard on 146.900 and wander downwards in frequency as the day progress, suspected as the
pager gets more traffic through, that it caused it to wander as it heated up each day.
Identified the pager frequency of 148.1375, this frequency used by several, including one TX
situated in Macquarie St in the city.
The problem was found consistent for a couple weeks, then disappeared.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
August 2003 - 2m rptr:
Started getting one half of weak and noisy conversations appearing through the 2m rptr,
on 31st July, we were contacted by Peter VK2ZTV from Newcastle, to say that the Muswellbrook 2m
rptr, which share the same frequency, had just been reinstalled back at Muswellbrook ( Mt Arthur)
after a very lengthy period off air. He was expecting people in Newcastle to be trying the
rptr out and may cause problems to RMB, which it did.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
June 2003 - 2m rptr:
After 9 months of interference free operation, suddenly short white noise bursts began
keying up regularly, from as little as 3 mins apart to 5 or 10 mins apart, the noise was recognised
as occuring previously, monitoring it for 2 weeks and comparing against other known nearby sources
did not yield a match against the interference, finally after going back to the ACA Radcomms database
showed a new device listed for a Kambah Road address, this belonged to the Bureau of Meterology and
resides on 151.500 Mhz, and licensed in September 2002, this did not make sense, as the noise source
had been seen before this date in early 2002, but disappeared in July 2002.
I had gone to the club site prior to finding this information and sat across the road,
monitoring the rptr input and output frequencies simultaneously, to see if noise can be heard on
input and also checking the known pager frequencies and other known devices on our site and nearby
sites. On the second visit, I found by listening to 151.500 that there was indeed a signal eminating
from the club site, coinciding directly with the keyup of the 2m rptr, so this looked like the culprit,
or at least it was involved.
On the third visit, Dom VK2JNA assisted me at the site, disconnecting, powering off each peice
of the club's equipment, radios, computers, anything, we did find a noise source like a buzz saw operating
near 151.500 Mhz, however, this was found to be noise radiating from the repeater controller and only
within a few metres, which distracted us from the real noise source. It was only heard on the input
frequency 6275 from the site carpark.
Armed with information and our confirmation of the interference coming from the site, I contacted
Paul VK2XUN from the RFS, who made some enquiries and discovered that someone from the BoM had visited
the RFS HQ building (where all the RFS comms gear is) to do some work on the BoM store and forward
digipeater located in the RFS Comms room upstairs, in the RFS HQ building. I was given the name and
phone number of the BoM people responsible for the BoM equipment. A phone called was made, problem
presented to them and BoM were apologetic and willing to provide assistance to resolve the problem.
I was able to confirm with BoM that they had just replaced a suspect receiver (transceiver) with
another unit in mid June. I also was able to confirm that they had been operating for about 2 years
at the site, but somehow only officially licensed in Sept 2002, (presumably as a result of ACA
investigation into our interference and the RVCP interference to their 156-161 Mhz receivers.)
Suddenly things fell into place, we had been getting interference noise bursts on and off
for at least 18 months, but due to the nature of the BoM transmissions, that generally they are quiet,
apart from rare heartbeat transmissions to indicate path reliability and due to the long spells of
no-rain over past couple of years, provided the totally random nature of this interference.
To explain this, the BoM device residing at our site, is a 300 baud, packet store & forward
repeater, it uses a protocol called ALERT (from USA) this digipeater forwards data collected
at dams from mainly the Central Coast area, plus one at Avalon, which detects changes of water level
at flood gates and reports a change of 1cm in water height, this is forwarded via this ALERT
packet protocol via Terrey Hills to BoM Headoffice in Elizabeth st in the city, so heavy rain at
Central Coast produces lots of packet activity shortly afterwards and again much later after the
water level drops again. The 151.500 Mhz frequency is a Australia wide BoM frequency, but most sites
around the country have their data collected at major regional sites, then pumped via interent
to Sydney, so with respect to Sydney, there are two forwarding sites, Terrey Hills and Cecil Park.
The Cecil Park also contains a secondary frequency of 152.400 Mhz.
Another site visit was arranged, Dom VK2JNA and myself attended and met Hugh from BoM and
Ian Stockwell (the RFS Operations officer) to investigate the interference, initially some tests
carried out and reduction of power output from 7w to 3w, this did not fix it, so Hugh then
made arrangements to return later that day with another unit ( basically a cct board transceiver
and digital board, in a can ( Made by Elcom of Qld), which was replaced later and the interference
removed. Dom and I were shown where the BoM antenna was, which a a set of folded dipoles, on the
eastern leg of the 150ft RFS tower, below the RFS lookout, with the dipoles offset on a section of
waterpipe.

August 2001 - 2m rptr:
making noise, added a BP filter to the pager transmitter
Symptoms:
Over the past week, or more, our voice repeater has been receiving noise bursts, randomly of short
duration of 1 or 2 seconds duration, these were mainly occuring during business hours. On the past
weekend 25th & 26th the white noise bursts became longer and more frequent, by Monday 27th August,
it had ramped up and becoming more noticeable and blocking valid user transmissions. The problem has
continued on Tuesday 28th, Wednesday 29th and today Thursday 30th August.
Investigations:
The worst period of this interference on Monday 27th, was around the 9am to 10 am period of the day
and reasonably consistent during the day, then diminishes to sparse occurances at nightime. While
driving home from Lane Cove to French Forest, I tried looking for a corresponding signal on the input
frequency 146.275, but did not hear any.
On Tuesday 28th, again it ramped up in from 8:30am to a rate of at least a burst every minute, peaking
around 9am where it is almost constant bursts, at this point I was monitoring remotely from my work
place at Lane Cove, I could now hear modulation and I recognised it as a paging transmitter, looking
at the input frequency of 146.275, again could not hear anything. This suggested to me, it would be a
device that was north of the site, or a low powered signal very close to the site. I checked Radcomms
to create a list of possible sources.
On Wednesday morning 29th August, I proceeded to the site area, with three different receivers to try
and hear the interfering signal and provide a match to a known source, which I did, using combinations
of the three receivers in my car, with and without antennas, I was able to identify the offending
transmitter, then driving to different points around the offending site, came to a 90% certainty. At
this point, during the tests, I was only hearing white noise bursts, comparing the input frequency of
146.275 I was only getting bursts of signal corresponding to the complete transmissions coming from
the pager, it was not until I started tuning up and down the 2metre amateur band, that I found the
centre of the interfering signal was approximately 146.000 Mhz and spread from approximately 145.500
to 146.500, then comparing what was heard at 146.000, it appeared I was only hearing sidebands at
146.275 MHz which now explained why I only heard part of the transmissions compared to the original
signal on 149.8875 MHz.
I did another drive around to various checkpoints, to confirm the 146.000 Mhz signal came from the
same offending site, which it did. I concluded my tests and proceeded to drive to my work, just as
I did, it began raining again and after 5 to 10 mins the interference ramped up and became almost
constant, again I could now hear paging modulation coming from through the repeater, which matched
clearly and precisely against the receiver monitoring the original source. I felt I now had about
99% certainty. The only concern was why to did produce an approximate 1 Mhz wide block of spurious
at 146.000 Mhz, whatever the reason, the strongest signal strengths that I found, were closest to
the pager site. It appeared the offending 1 Mhz wide signal could only be heard within approximately
0.5 km radius of the pager site and is affected by the rain. We had a problem similar to this a few
years back, which only occurred when it was windy & raining, then the problem disappeared for about a
year, until now.
We have also been monitoring during the night, using the ScanRec recording software, which records and
timestamsps, to monitor if the problem occurs during the night, it was found to occur just a couple
between midnight and 6am, it is predominantly at its worse from 9am to 5pm each day.

February 2000 - 2m rptr:
This time it was not pagers, but some ratbag individuals, believed to be local, just
sitting on the frequency waiting for people to use the rptr, then coming on air and swearing
and being general pains. Sometimes one of them would be mobile, usually males, sometimes a female
would be heard swearing and abusing normal licensed users. This occurred for about a month, all hours
of day and night they would appear to annoy anyone using the rptr. Otherwise, they sometimes came
on air to speak to each other, if one of them was mobile.
There were threats made against the club on-air, that they knew were the repeater was and that they
were intending to break in and smash the repeater and also threat made against individuals who used
the repeater.
Other radio clubs had reported similiar activity, these people seemed to leave a trail starting
from far north coast and down to south coast, possibly gypsies moving from one town to the next.
There were reports of other clubs being broken into, equipment stolen and/or vandalised.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
October 1999 - 2m rptr:
This is an extract of Dom VK2JNA's dissertation of the events:
Initial details
A signal appeared on our repeater's receive frequency. It was FM voice or music (that was somewhat
intelligable) with a duration & repetition rate like a pager transmitter burst. When the interfering
signal was around it sometimes broke the squelch & at other times did not (squelch set near maximum).
It mostly occured during the working day (9am-5pm Mon-Fri) although it happened sporadically outside
this time.
Investigations
Members were asked to keep an ear on the interfering signal so that we might catch a callsign or
other information that would give us a clue as to the source of part of our problem. Morrie (VK2BIS)
found a higher signal strength from the South-West of Sydney with his 2m yagi beam. Since the signal
was music or voice and the signal strength varied Steve (VK2KFJ) thought that there might be a
broadcast station mixing with something else to land on our frequency. He searched the 88-108MHz band
but found no matches. Knowing there was some sort of broadcast band around 151MHz, Steve suggested to
James (VK2JN) that he might tune around on a scanner, looking for voice/music that was identical to
the interfering signal. James found the signal at 151.450MHz. Steve, armed with this frequency, found
the location of the station in the Bankstown area (via the ACA database). Whilst visiting the area
he tuned around on his ham radio through the 2m pager band & found a pager that transmitted
co-incidently with the apearence of the interfering signal. This frequency was 148.8625MHz. At this
point some simple algebra shows a potential 3rd-order intermodulation product landing right on our
receive frequency.
A = Voice/music frequency = 151.450 MHz
B = pager frequency = 148.8625 MHz
C = VK2RMB Rx frequency = 146.275 MHz
2B - A = C (if this equation holds, then there could be a problem)
(2 X 148.8625) - 151.450 = 146.275 (it did!)
or, another way of looking at it...
D = A - B = 151.450 - 148.8625 = 2.5875 MHz ( difference frequency )
B - D = 148.8625 - 2.5875 = 146.275 MHz
Armed with this & other evidence from other club members who listened & compiled notes, we filled
in an Australian Communications Authority (ACA) complaint form RF66 and attached a letter of
explanation (with our investigations). I telephoned them to determine the most appropriate person
before faxing all this in.
ACA Investigations
The ACA were fairly quick to move on this (considering it was around Christmas) & confirmed that
they found the interfering signal in the south-west of Sydney on the Rx frequency. They said they
believed it was an intermodulation product as we had suggested. They asked if they could come & do
measurements at our site with our aerial & cavity filters just to confirm the site of the mixing of
the signals (our place, the pager or the broadcaster??).
Opening up the club rooms when the ACA investigator arrived, we plugged in the aerial (via the 3 Rx
cavity filters) to the spectrum analyzer & watched the screen until we saw the interfering signal.
This took a fair while since were were at the club rooms at 7:30am! The level of the interfering
signal was not strong but was over -110dbm. This level was enough to come through with weak (ham)
input signals, but not enough to key up the repeater by itself at that time.
Whilst there we did a sweep of the cavity filters that we have installed, just to check that they
were working adequately. We confirmed that they were working quite well for home-made filters,
although a little down on performance compared to what would be expected from professional cavity
filters. "Perfectly adequate". We have drawn the sweep output of the diplexer cavities (6) & the
bandpass (1) cavity filters & will be shown here!
ACA Results
A few days later the ACA rang me with details confirming the source of the interfering signal. It
was caused by mixing in the pager transmitter & being transmitted at a few milliwatts right on our
receive frequency. The pager owner had been notified by the ACA with a suggestion to put in an
isolator followed by a (low-pass) cavity filter (LP because isolators have a habit of producing
harmonics). They promised to get right to it & actually installed this filtering the very next day.
I'm impressed.
(After a week) This particular interference problem seems to have gone away. I have just confirmed
this with the ACA & will pass on our thanks to the pager owner for their quick co-operation.
