Symptom:
Transmit audio from the SMC-34 sounds distorted or muffled
as compared with the audio provided by the transceiver own microphone.
Corrective action:
Replace the front of the microphone, add a
cushion inside the microphone well and change the plastic sheet inside the
microphone well.

Procedure:
- Remove the three small black Phillip's head screws from the rear of the
speaker microphone.
- Carefully remove the back cover. The "Lock Switch" lever and PTT lever can
now be removed.
- Remove the volume control knob by pulling straight away from the
case.
- Remove the two small black Phillips's head screws that secure the PC Board
assembly to the front case of the microphone. You can now gently lift the PC
Board assembly straight up and away from the front case.
- Remove the packing, screen, and sheet from the front case of the speaker
microphone.
- Insert the cushion, sheet, screen and backing as shown in the accompanying
illustrations.
- Reverse steps 1 - 4 to reassemble the unit. Note: Carefully remove the
rubber gasket from the old front case and position it in the new front case
groove before replacing the rear case.
Time required for this modification is .5 hour or less.
