++++++++++++++++++ Using Spectrogram for Comparison Testomg ++++++++++++++++++ From: "Bob Tellefsen" To: "Elecraft Mail List" Date: Mon, 26 May 2003 09:17:43 -0700 Subject: [Elecraft] KDSP2 and Sp[ectrogram Hi Phil I use my old Palomar antenna noise bridge for a noise source. I used Spectrogram to peak up my filters in combination with the KDSP2. It certainly makes for a more symmetrical and clean display that way. I set my KDSP2 center frequency at 550 Hz and 50 Hz BW. Then adjusted the .05 crystal cw filter to match that with a smooth curve above and below center frequency. Then I did the same with my other crystal filter BWs, .15, .5 and 1.1 Khz. I set the DSP to these same BWs for matching. The combination of crystal filter and DSP really improves the overall passband shape. I used the KDSP2 all through the WPX. It sure was nice getting rid of much of the background noise. Much less wearing during a long stint. I ran the crystal filter at 1.1 kHz BW, and the DSP at LPF during my search periods (most of the time), and varied the NR settings between 1 and 3, depending on the noise level and signal strengths. Conditions were pretty punk at times, and even the NR didn't help when there was no signal energy there :-) I'm looking foreward to using the DSP on 160m next winter for the contests there. 73, Bob N6WG ++++++++++++++++++ From: "Lyle Johnson" To: "Phil Wheeler" Cc: "Elecraft Reflector" Subject: RE: [Elecraft] K2 DSP - Standardised Input for Comparison Testing Date: Mon, 26 May 2003 09:21:42 -0700 Hello Phil! > Having used Spectrogram to adjust my xtal filters just > prior to building the KDSP2, I wonder if anyone has > used that software and a noise generator to compare > the K2 with DSP to without DSP. And of course, it is important to really watch the input levels or you'll display all sorts of artifacts that aren't really there. But you already knew that. > I'd try it but, unlike some others here (e.g., N0SS, > I've not doped out how to capture the Spectrogram > images to document the results. My version of Spectrogram is the older freeware one, so it doesn't make wonderful plots. But, you can do a screen capture under Windows, and then paste that into a diocument. 73, Lyle KK7P ++++++++++++++++ From: "Bob - AG5Q" To: Cc: "Elecraft Reflector" Subject: Re: [Elecraft] K2 DSP - Standardised Input for Comparison Testing Date: Mon, 26 May 2003 11:35:54 -0500 > > Having used Spectrogram to adjust my xtal filters just prior to building > the KDSP2, I wonder if anyone has used that software and a noise > generator to compare the K2 with DSP to without DSP. Then you can use "Control-V" to paste the image into a paint program such as Paint Shop Pro, Paint Shop, or even the Microsoft Paint program that comes with Windows. Then you can add annotation to the image with the text and line drawing tools. Save the image as a gif (prefered) or a bmp. These result in larger files than jpg, but jpg causes line drawings to become fuzzy. Here's a link to an example of a screen I captured and then annotated: http://ag5q.home.attbi.com/audioout_2.gif 73/ Bob - AG5Q +++++++++++++++ Reply-To: From: "Ron D'Eau Claire" To: "'Elecraft Reflector'" Subject: RE: [Elecraft] K2 DSP - Standardised Input for Comparison Testing Date: Mon, 26 May 2003 09:44:55 -0700 Well, in the ancient (5.05) version of Spectrogram there is a command = "save image" under the "file" menu. Generically, in Windows just press and hold Alt then hit Prt Scr (Print Screen) to capture the active window as a bitmap to the windows = "clipboard". Then you can "paste" (Ctrl-V) it almost anywhere a bitmap can go... Ron AC7AC K2 # 1289 -----Original Message----- how do I do a screen capture under Windows? The various combinations capture different parts of the screen. One captures the entire screen, one captures the active window, the third captures the contents of the active window. -- Thomas M. In Spectrogram: Stop the recording then: Function>Save Image>Window Image - select jpeg and the rest is routine. Works for me.
