Look for RedHat 5.2 to 6.2. With that setup you could run the graphical version also. de KI0OT, Brad On Mon, 12 Nov 2001, Jack Bennett wrote: > Hi Guys, > > Does anyone know if there is any softawre to run PSK31 on a 386 with WIN > 3.1 or DOS. There are quite a few distros that focus on such a small system. Try PeeWee Linux, TinyLinux, tom.s root boot. Beginners projects they are not. Do some research and check out the Linux HOW-TOs. They are invaluable. 73/72 Adam kb2jpd +++++++++++++++ Date: Tue, 13 Nov 2001 17:02:55 -0500 (EST) From: Stephan Greene To: Low Power Amateur Radio Discussion Subject: [111505] Re: PSK 31 Minimal Configuration Message-ID: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII On Mon, 12 Nov 2001 muglesto at ecentral.com wrote: > There is a DOS "command line" version for Linux that works well - you > should be able to get it going on a 386 w/o much problem. I don't think, however, that emulation answers the question. Performance is going to be slower, because all O/S commands have to be translated into host system and then run, rather than run natively. There's also the problem of making sure hardware-level resources are correctly configured in the host system, made available to the emulator, and then configured correctly in the emulator. > On Mon, 12 Nov 2001, Jack Bennett wrote: > > > Hi Guys, > > > > Does anyone know if there is any softawre to run PSK31 on a 386 with WIN > > 3.1 or DOS. Soundcard based digital modes are DSP. As one limited data point, I recall first using a Pentium 120 system to try to monitor SSTV transmissions. Performance, frankly, was terrible. The same software on a PII-350 ran fine. This was using Win95. I haven't tried this with Linux. I don't know if there are any DOS-based PSK31 programs. Graphical-based systems will run slower on the older hardware. More ram can help. But Win 3.1 or X-windows on a 386 is still going to be SLOW. Sound cards for older systems may also have problems. These older systems are FINE as terminal displays and for many dedicated applications. If you have an external terminal unit that supports your desired mode, it may be fine. 73 Steve KA1LM +++++++++++++++++ Date: Tue, 13 Nov 2001 18:46:32 -0700 (MST) From: To: Stephan Greene Cc: Low Power Amateur Radio Discussion Subject: [111540] Re: PSK 31 Minimal Configuration Message-ID: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII Sorry, I said that wrong. There is a LINUX version that doesn't run under the window environment. It comes with TWPSK (the window version). It does a good ASCII version of the scope and everything so it isn't too bad to use (not as pretty but works FB).
