And I must say this is by far the smallest, lightest little p/s I've found for the K2. It was mentioned earlier on this reflector, but I will add my 2 cents and ask a question. The supply is regulated at about 12.3 v, capable of 4.16 amps and makes absolutely no rf noise (even with a long-wire antenna lead wrapped around the unit). It is no bigger than a cigarette pack and weighs about 12 ounces including AC and output cords. It is perfect for suitcasing. The item is Mouser's number 552-PSA60W-120 ($36.95) and requires a 2-prong power cord Mouser number 173-21101 ($3.65). A possible drawback of the unit is that it appears to be difficult to remove the shell so I have not been able to check if it is possible to increase the voltage to 14.2 for those who wish to use it also to charge the battery. If there is anyone out there who knows, I would appreciate knowing (a) how do you open the case, and (b) what adjustment is used to increase the voltage? thanks, and best wishes, dave belsley, w1euy ++++++++++++++++ Date: Wed, 12 Sep 2001 07:10:06 -0400 From: "Mark J. The spec sheet for this power supply is available on the Mouser web site: http://www.mouser.com/specsheets/55260W.pdf It's already capable of operation at 230 volts; the operating range is specified as 90-264v, 47-63Hz. Mouser may not stock a power cord with the connector you would need; you would probably have to buy the US cord and modify it. Mouser has an international sales department, so it's presumably possible to order from them. Shipping might be expensive, though. The case of this sort of supply is typically sealed shut. (It's not just a conspiracy to keep us from working on them; it's evidently easier to get safety approval for something that's not easy to open.) There is likely a voltage adjustment somewhere inside, but getting to it might be a challenge. +++++++++++++++++ Date: Wed, 12 Sep 2001 09:52:02 -0400 From: "David A. Belsley" Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Mouser Power Supply Mike: There is a very slight difference. Using my SEC 1223, which is adjusted for 14.2v, I have max power of 16.1w on 40 meters. With the 12.3v supply, I get 15.8w. The difference is clearly not enough to worry about. But, as others have noted, if you want the higher voltage, get the 15v version of the supply (I guess it is the same physical size, but you might check) and pop a diode in line. best wishes, dave belsley, w1euy - --On Wednesday, September 12, 2001 8:54 PM -0400 N2JZmail at aol.com wrote: > Greetings Dave (W1EUY) et al, > > In terms of dB I'm sure this is in the noise, but let me ask it anyway, > have you noticed any significant difference in the K2 power out at 12.2v > verse 13.8v? I'm sure there's a number of us here who benefited from your info! 73s, Mike N2JZ +++++++++++++++++ Date: Sat, 15 Sep 2001 11:02:59 -0400 From: "David A. Belsley" Subject: [Elecraft] More on the Phihong p/s Well, I just bit the bullet and made an attempt to open the Phihong 12v p/s to see about adjusting its output voltage. The unit is indeed sealed, but several well place thwacks (that's right, thwacks) with a 1" putty knife cracked the seal, leaving the case fully intact. There is no voltage adjustment pot. I guess it may be possible to alter some resistor to effect the desired goal, but I don't have a schematic and decided against further attempts. Since I don't use the internal battery pack, I have no real need for the higher voltage. I resealed the case with acetone, which now looks none the worse for the wear. So, for those of you who want to use this lovely little supply with the internal battery pack, you had better opt for the 15v unit, which is a little bit larger physically. If you are not in need of charging the battery, the 12v unit is more than just fine. best wishes, dave belsley, w1euy ++++++++++++++++++ Date: Wed, 19 Sep 2001 23:40:22 -0500 From: Dave Gingrich Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Mouser p/s At 23:42 9/13/2001 -0700, John Grebenkemper, KI6WX wrote: >Dave; >Let me know how it works for you. >-John John, The PSS-45W-150 seems to be FB. Out of the box, no load it runs about 15.4 and 14.7 indicated on the K2, which is a little hot for the battery. One diode inserted in the cable takes it to 13.9 indicated on the K2. Perfect! The thing is smaller than my Dell laptop cube, and much lighter. Regulation seems to be fine and no noise that I've heard so far. - -Dave ===================== Dave Gingrich, K9DC Indianapolis, Indiana Dave at dcg.org +++++++++++++++ Date: Thu, 20 Sep 2001 18:42:23 -0700 From: lhlousek Subject: [Elecraft] Noisy Phihong PSA-60W-120 PS Elecraftisti, I received a new Phihong PSA-60W-120 power supply a few days ago. I tried it briefly in my shack and it seemed fine. However, I was using it the past two days with my K2 operating from a hotel room and I was getting S8 noise from it at various places on 40 through 10 meters. The noise was bad enough that it put the kibosh on a couple of S9 QSOs when it moved in on the signal. The antenna was my usual dipoles with one end strung along and hanging from the end of a collapsible fishing pole stuck out the window and the other arm of the dipole (counterpoise?) strung up in the room. This arrangement has worked VY FB with K1 and K2 while using a couple of other switchers and batteries. I now also have the PSS-45W-150 power supply that I'm going to try with my portable antennas. I will report on my findings. Lou W7DZN ++++++++++++++++ Date: Thu, 20 Sep 2001 20:29:40 -0700 From: lhlousek Subject: [Elecraft] Other Phihong PS noisy too! OK. That didn't take long. I tried the Phihong PSS-45W-150 with my hotel antenna and it too puts outs S8 hash the same as the PSA-60W. These power supplies may be OK for use in the shack where the antennas are reasonably far away from the supply but for field use with close in wire antennas they may be too noisy. Yes, I agree after opening the shield on my station antenna. No problem using my station antenna, but something close is a problem. At least I can use the battery! I didn't notice it at first since my shack also includes several computers, printers, 100 meg ethernet, cable modem and ISDN router. I also can hear my Samlex 1223, but the Phihong is much noisier. ===================== Dave Gingrich, K9DC +++++++++++++++++
