Wish I knew the original author, but might be worth investigating anyway. Hope this helps. 73 - Tom Hammond N0SS >Subject: K2 MATCHING PAINT > > >Anybody know of a paint which will match the K2 enclosure? I have that image... a JPEG about 34K size. I would recommend that you NOT use regular paint on it - specify a hard enamel (preferably solvent based) because the stuff that is usually on the shelf does not cure hard and therefore is not as durable. The good stuff may cost a few bux more, so take your pick and take your chances. If you know of a good automotive paint supplier with a friendly counter person, you might be able to get a small quantity of really good paint mixed, but the smallest they will usually mix is a quart and don't be surprised if it costs 20 to 25 dollars. 73, Don Wilhelm -Chapel Hill, NC W3FPR home page: http://www.qsl.net/w3fpr/ QRP-L # 485 K2 SN 0020 mailto: w3fpr at arrl.net ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Date: Thu, 3 May 2001 22:02:22 -0400 From: "Dana D. Generally they have the ability to mix a small batch of paint and load it into a 14 oz spray can all pressurized and ready to go. I am new to this reflector. Lisa tells me my K2 kit was sent in the last couple of days. Looking forward to getting it up and running. 73, Dana Dyer, Bristol, Maine W7KLU +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Date: Wed, 28 Nov 2001 00:22:01 -0500 From: "ZOOM" Subject: [Elecraft] Paint for you ELECRAFT I have read allot of posts by people asking for a paint match for their Elecraft rigs. During your course of using your gear, it is likely you'll get a scratch or scrape. Especially if you are taking your gear with you. I have been looking as well for a paint that would match the Elecraft gear and I found it! The paint is made by Tremclad. The name is Tremclad Textured (spray bomb). It sprays on easily and drys fast leaving a textured finish like that on the Elecraft gear. The cap shows the color and you'll recognize it right off. Here is a pic of a small cabinet I sprayed which I think I'll make an external speaker and power supply for my K2. As you can see in the pic, it's a perfect match and texture! http://valveman.tripod.ca/K2Paint.jpg I just wanted to share this info with the group. Used sparingly it's magic but no paint color ever seems to match right out of the bottle. I start with Humbrol (a British paint for toy soldiers and models) color #32 "MATT" that can be found at major hobby shops. Color #32 is generally just a little darker than the Elecraft / Icom gray so I'll apply a touch and see how it looks, then mix and lighten while it drys (on aluminum foil) with the lighter colored Humbrol #126 or #129. The color does not need to be exact, a little darker is good but texture is very important so the least amount used to cover bare metal is the general rule. If the color tried is a really bad match, it wipes off with a rag if you move quickly, trial and error will bring you to perfection! 73 es GL, Don Rasmussen WB8YQJ/6 K2 #3312 Carlsbad, Ca.
