This is a bug-fix version of K2S v1.0. Due to a lot of requests for the network version of K2S (K2Anywhere), I decided to upload K2Anywhere to my webpage for anyone who would like to try it out. Currently, K2Anywhere/K2Server has been tested only on WinNT 4.0 and Win ME. It may also run on Win 2K but is definitely not running on Win XP (!) Anyone wants to try? Hi gang, I am working on a software charityware project that controls the K2 using a computer that runs Windows 95, 98, ME, and NT 4.0. The project finally started a few days ago, but it gets to the point where it is quite useful to control the K2 without touching it ;=) (well, you still need to power it up, turn up the volume, and key the radio!) I am thinking about releasing a "work-in-progress" copy of it so that you guys can play with since it doesn't look like "K2Remote" is going to be available anytime soon. That way, you can test it for me while I work on its features. Please send me an email if you are interested in testing it. Initially, I probably will send the ZIP files to a few persons who can install, test, and distribute it for me since I don't have a FTP site. I will continue working on its features in my spare time (if I have any left between parenting 2 'lil kids, doing house choir, work, building QRP kits and operating them) then release improved version of the software from time to time whenever I feel like I accomplish a major milestone in the project 72/73 es happy tinkering, Dan, KE6D ++++++++++++++++++++++ Date: Tue, 30 Oct 2001 19:22:43 -0800 From: ke6d at juno.com Subject: Re: [Elecraft] K2 Remote...it works! I found a small bug and Dan KE6D had a new version on the site with the bug fixed by Sunday. The program does everything it should and is like having the K2 on the computer screen. I used to run my TNC with a 50 foot RS232 cable and it would be interesting to know if the K2 could do the same. Radio Shack has 900 MHZ wireless head phones that are good for 150 ft. The K2 control software and the wireless headphones would sure make an easy way to remote the K2 to another part of the house . I like the keyboard CW and the ability to control the rig from the computer. My first keyboard contact was WP4IZQ in Puertorico at 03:30z on 20 meters using 1 watt. I thought the band was out and never expected to work anyone. As they say "try it" results may vary but I sure enjoy my results. 73 Ken W0CZ +++++++++++++++++++ Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Com Ports vs. K2 Remote... K2S is written using Visual C++ 5.0. It does not use any special driver beside the MFC/Win 32 API provided with the compiler. K2S use a registry key (this is where most, if not all, Windows applications save things that are customary to their apps. K2S use a registry key called "KE6D Software" to keep its data. If you wish, you may use RegEdit to look at the Registry under Local Machine/Software then delete the KE6D Software registry variable. The COM Port configuration for K2S is kept in there, but it is only a set of parameters such as Port #, baud rate, Parity, and stop bit. When K2S runs, it looks for these parameters and initialize the specified port. It does mess around with any other com ports. > > Ever since then, my Elecraft K2 Control refuses to run on any > serial port other than COM1. So far only COM1 will now talk to K2 > Remote. My suggestion is to check out to see if the other ports (other than COM1) are functioning by hooking up the K2 to COM2, then run a terminal program such as Hyperterminal (configure the ports per the KIO2 spec with local echo enable) In hyperterminal, type "FA;", the K2 should response with FAxxxxxxxxx if the port is working properly. If there is no responsed, chances are the port is not working (Since your K2 is working with com 1, the KIO2 must be working) I would spend sometimes to investigate why that port no longer works by running other software which make use of that COM port successfully. > (The Rigblaster is still happy connected to any of the three ports.) What IRQ and IO address do use for it? From my experience working with serial ports on ISA architecture, you can only share (and not very well) an interrupt with another COM port simultaneously. You can configure and use them on your system, but they can not coexist well. If my memory is correct, under the old ISA architecture, COM1 and COM4 share the same IRQ4 and COM2 and COM3 share the same IRQ3 (unless you can configure the extra com port to use a different IRQ, it is going to interfere with each other if the 2 com ports with the same IRQ are used at the same time.) Can you read your COM3 ISA card to see how it is configured? > I realize my problem is a bit off the usual reflector subject > matter, but if > any of you have any suggestions about possible fixes to get the KIO2 > to talk > once again on any of the three COM Ports, I'd sure appreciate some > help. > > By the way, I've already tried uninstalling and reinstalling K2 > Remote, but > the COM1-only problem still persists. It worked flawlessly. Visit Dan's web site, http://www.qsl.net/ke6d/, for additonal details. You can download K2Anywhere from this site. Note that it is still Beta Software. W8RIK and N8FYD were both running WIN98 and connected to the Internet via cable modems. Our attempts to go through a router were not successful. This will probably require setting the K2Server PC to a static IP address, exposing it to the Internet using DMZ hosting, and disabling some of the routers default filtering. A work in progress. In our tests, the K2/100 and K2Server were at W8RIK's QTH. N8FYD connected to the K2Server from his location using K2Anywhere. N8FYD had full control of the K2. We used NetMeeting to stream audio. Folks, it was awesome! For those who want to try, a few thoughts to augment Dan's installation notes: 1. Connect directly to your cable/DSL modem and disable any firewall software. 2. Get your IP address and write it down. You can use "winipcfg" (Windows 98) to see your IP address. Recommend that you do "release all" and "renew all" and then record the IP address. 3. Configure Naming Service with this IP address and port 10000. Modify the Naming_Service.exe command line to look like this: Naming-Service.exe -ORBEndPoint iiop://xx.xx.xx.xx:10000 Where xx.xx.xx.xx is the IP address obtained in step 2. 4. You do not need to ammend the command lines for K2Sever or K2Anywhere. You must, however, edit the system configuration parameters of both programs to show the IP Address of the K2Server PC (obtained in step 2) as the "Name Server Host". The "Name Server Port" should be 10000. 5. The server PC connects to the K2 I/O port, runs Naming_Service, and runs K2Server. 6. The remote (client) station simply runs K2Anywhere. 7. There are several ways to stream audio. We used Netmeeting. KE6D has done a great job with K2S, K2Sever, & K2Anywhere. It is a work in progress, it is a labor of love, and it is freeware/charityware. If you enjoy it, give a Dan some words of encouragement and donate a few $$ to your favorite charity. 73s de Joe W8RIK ++++++++++++++++++ Date: Sun, 2 Mar 2003 12:55:55 -0500 From: Pat n8vw To: elecraft at mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Elecraft] K2 Remote via the Internet On Sun, Mar 02, 2003 at 12:48:00PM -0500, Joe Hussey wrote: > For those who want to try, a few thoughts to augment Dan's installation > notes: > > 1. If you want to enable your setup to be accessed remotely by name, then use the services from someone like www.dyndns.org. They will grant you a name that you can use to attach to your home setup, even if the home setup IP address changes. The name will be something like m3cjf_remote_k2.homedns.org Also, you can nearly always configure your home firewall to allow a route in from the outside to your K2 server. Some firewalls will even work with dynamic DNS servers such as dyndns.org and update your ISP's granted IP Address. I would also recommend that you use a PC that does not matter if it gets trashed from an outside intruder. If I have a PC configured in this way, I pre-save my disk onto CDs using Ghost, so it is a matter of minutes to restore the PC back to it's pristeen state. I do this kind of stuff all the time, if anyone wants more info or clarification, just email me. There is a shareware type of "pcanywhere" done by bell labs, > or at least I think you mean VNC software. I love VNC as it is open source, runs on Linux and Windows and one can tinker with it. I can see why you think it is a good idea, but unfortunately it it has bigger security implications. Firstly the K2 PC will still need to have a IP route inside the home network. Secondly There is a potential hole for expoitation via the VNC IP Port. Thirdly, and the most dengerous, once an intruder has got past the VNC password, you can then use the K2 PC to browse your home network. These are the kind of recommendations I would make to anybody that was paying for my advice: 1. Run personal firewall software on the PC in question and only open up the port for the K2 remote software. 2. Put a hub or switch between the PC and the rest of your network, and make the power supply to that switched.by remote control somehow - you can get Telephone-based or Pager-based power switches. That way you can control access to the PC when you are away. 3 Ghost the PC for quick restore if it is trashed. 4. Ensure your firewall has the latest patches. 5. If possible, get a firewall with a DMZ (Demilitarised zone) ethernet port. Put the K2 PC on the DMZ connection, but expect to get it trashed. 6. Open up the K2 IP Port on the Firewall to the IP address of the K2 PC. 7. If your firewall allows it, only allow fixed IP addresses from the Internet to access your PC. If you want ANYBODY to access it, then your can leave this step out. Lastly, if anyone has a K2 remote setup, and are worried about potential explotation, I can do some gentle probing to find out if they have a problem - but please coordinate this with your ISP first as I will get a complaint otherwise! I cannot say enough good about this product. What it gives you is a computer control front end for your rig. You get a big screen full of info, and *lots* of controls from your keyboard. I have been using it for several months ago, with nary a hiccup. It is highly intuitive to use, and makes the K2 an even better rig, IMHO. I like being able to click directly on whichever CW filtre I want--no need to cycle through to get to the filtre I actually need. Plus it is interesting to click directly between very narrow and wide, to see quickly the effect. You can also switch the AGC off and on from the screen. What I particularly find useful is the type ahead buffer, which allows me to type up to *five long lines* of text [g]. The software also offers 12 different memorised messages, very useful for contesting. Anyway, if you have been waiting for such a program, give this one a look. Highly recommended.
