I've set out below the functions I think people want, for version 1 at least, and would appreciate feedback. This will not be a trivial piece of software and so I would also appreciate email addresses of potential beta testers. Whoever tests this stuff should be aware that they may find some bugs that turn up only under certain circumstances, so I may need plenty of info when reporting a bug, perhaps also the more intimate details of the PC setup. Testers will also need to be tolerant of the fact that early versions of the software may screw up their K2 settings! Beta testing is not always fun, but you will at least get your name on the "Help About" credits!! I would also appreciate email addresses of reviewers prepared to write short articles for their favourite mags/websites. List of Functions for Version 1 ------------------------------- 1. Listing of current settings for printing etc. I had in mind that there would be two types of display/print. The first ordered by logical function, eg XFIL and AFIL settings grouped together, and the second type ordered by which button is used to set them. 2. Save of current settings to file with user-entered comments like: "My setup for CW working on RSGB field day" 3. Dump of saved K2 parameters from file back to K2. This might be have tick boxes to select the restoration of setting groups - eg a tick box to restore XFIL and a tick box to restore AFIL settings. Version 2 Candidate - screen-based parameter setting ------------------------------------------------------- This version will display the current settings on a multi-panel screen display, allowing you to change them dynamically, eg without having to use the K2 buttons. As in 1,2,3 above you would be able to load past settings from file and dump them to the K2, but you would be able to review and change them on screen first, trying out the optimum settings. As far as timescales go, I think I might have an early version for testing available 2nd week of March. There will probably be two releases during this stage. Release one will probably have the functions of "save to file" and "display/print" of the parameters. Release 2 will have the restore to K2 function added. Hi Gary, What I think I've decided on is to display all the parameters on a window and let the user cut and paste into their favorite text processor (eg notepad, word etc). They can do whay they loke with it then - print it, save it to disk etc. BTW here is a quick progress report. To date, I've got the K2 cycling through the main LCD displays that you get when you press the display button - eg freuqncy, voltage, date and time. I've also writen the extract and display function discussed above for the same displays. Over the next few days I'll be doing the Band by Band filter settings, and after that will come the walking thru all the Edit menu settings. I'm on track for release 1 for the 1st/2nd week of March. If you want your name in the credits, even if you have no queries or problems, send the form anyway, because it makes it easier to cut and paste your details into the credits - see below. A couple of people managed to cycle their K2 thru all the tests, but the majority of testers have come across problems in running K2OOL. These problems seemed to boil down to: 1. A bug in checking RANT and SPLT menu displays which is now fixed in the latest release on the website. 2. Apparent variations in response times from the K2, especially just after a band change, causing time-out problems in the program. At this point I propose to concentrate on working with the testers who are currently experiencing timeout problems to try and resolve the issue. So if you spot spelling errors or find a setting missing from K2OOL's reports, please let me know - but please send a bug report form and the dump as well. Just a reminder, if you download the latest version, make sure you delete or uninstall the old versions. Some people have been downloading the latest version and running the old version! I've had a question from a blind tester who has trouble reading the documentation. It is not much use to him, as the documentation relies heavily on screenshots. Are there any volunteers around who can help draft a text-only verion? I'm happy to maintain it once written, I just don't have the time to write the first version. Tony, Thanks for all the work you've put in on this. With regard to older firmware: I made several tweaks to the RS232 command set between the first limited production release of rev 2 (2.01B) and the latest (2.03D). So, I would expect K2ool to stumble upon more than one odd bit of data. Of course the older the operator's K2 firmware is, the more likely they are to be upgrading it, so I'm hoping K2ool will be able to report anything out of the ordinary, then substitute some useful default value that the op can change if desired. 73, Wayne N6KR +++++++++++++++++ From: "Tony Wells" To: "Wayne Burdick" Cc: Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Re: K2OOL Beta Testing - end of day report Date: Sat, 15 Mar 2003 01:23:44 -0000 Hi Wayne, Well the work is paying off - I'm now getting reports of people only finding spelling errors, so we are getting close to completing the list of bugs, and with a growing wish list. Are you guys at the factory getting any feedback from the silent majority on the usefulness/functionality? I've had a few people who just wanted to see what what it was all about - they just downloaded it and sent me encouraging notes, so it looks like I'm getting the functionality mostly right. The AGC thing can be worked around I think, because I can check the annunciator. At the moment, the program just stops and spews an audit trail if there are any anomalies. However once I've picked up all the variations I can make the program a bit more flexible. Any comments on BFO settings? I've had some queries on this. I've assumed there is no way of retrieving that info without a probe on. I've been thinking of allowing users to record the settings manually in the system, so they will at least be recorded somewhere. Another question - I'm posting testing news and new release messages to the reflector. I just want to check that that is ok? I figured that if I keep it to a max of 1-2 per day it won't annoy people too much. Firstly, conditions are bad at this QTH. There is a lot of QRM here as all doors and windows in the house are being replaced. Clearly this is the best time to buy a grand piano, as there seems to be a hole large enough to... get a grand piano thru! And I can't find my K1 anywhere! As I type this my laptop is balanced on a bathroom cabinet and the K2 is on top of pile of clothes in a basket. The builders think I'm some kind of eccentric mad scientist - they've noticed the 8ft mag loop in the garden and enquired about the "Powered by Red Hat" sticker on the microwave... I think one of the builders must have been in prison for some time, as he seems to hammer messages in morse (or is it just the noise driving me slowly mad??). Anyway. Despite all the QRM a lot of coding has been written to address known problems, and some of the wish list. I hope to be able to issue a new beta this Thursday/Friday after testing. The new code addresses a number of things including 1. Fix to the overwriting of current band entries when memories are recalled 2. AGC not being reported correctly in *some* versions of old firmware 3. Finally think I've got a fix for the few remaining users with persistant timing problems communicating with the K2 I'm off now to make the builders a cup of tea - why is it that builders always seem to have six spoonfuls of sugar in their tea? Is it an energy thing? This is not related to the setup of the filters and their related BFOs. There is an independent BFO for LSB and USB; CW and CW-R; RTTY and RTTY-R. Each mode has an independent set of 4 filters, and each filter has two independent BFO settings. Note that it is possible to have both BFOs for any one filter each on one side of the carrier frequency (normal upper and lower sideband), but they can also be both set to the same side - this is normally an error in the filter setup, but could be used to advantage say for use with the digital modes when one wants to create an expanded 'pseudo passband tuning' combination. The granularity of each setting is between 20 and 30 Hz. Hope that helps. 73, Don W3FPR ----- Original Message ----- This is a general question about the granularity of XFIL settings on a per-band basis. Can someone clarify them please? What I need to know is, is it possible to I customize XFIL settings to the extent that I have different settings for USB vs LSB, CW vs CWREV and Rtty vs RttyRev? +++++++++++++++++ From: "Tony Wells" To: "Elecraft" Date: Thu, 27 Mar 2003 11:58:12 -0000 Subject: [Elecraft] Need another name for K2OOL -/ K2 Dump and Save Sorry folks, I' appreciate your input again. Lots of people seem to like K2OOLS, but it doesn't just, well, feel right. I even solicited my family on a name for this and got: >From my Partner - "Why don't you do something useful, like repairing the garage door, and don't forget it's Mothers Day this Sunday." >From my 6-year old - "Barbie" >From my 14 month old daughter - "Bok Bok Splish Splash" (that means time for bottle and bath in our house) Well, I thought BokBok was a great name for something, but unfortunately had no "K2" in it. In desperation I also mulled over Bok2Bok and Bak2Bak, but, well, they seemed a bit over-pretentious. Still in desperation I wondered about "Kato" - the pugnacious valet out of the Pink Panther movies. In the end, I'm inclined towards "K2Z" because......its. easy to type. 8-) Regards, Tony M3CJF G7IGG ++++++++++++++++++ From: "Tony Wells" To: Date: Sat, 29 Mar 2003 11:34:29 -0000 Subject: [Elecraft] K2Z (formerly K200l) Beta Tester Credits Dear Beta Testers, I'm on the home straight of packaging the latest beta release, and will send out a url soon, very soon.
