In the case of the K2 shaft encoder, we simply mean use small long-nose pliers to wrap each hookup wire around its associated pin in a small U-shape or single loop. This keeps the wires in place wile soldering. Since the pin spacing is 0.1", you'll need to examine the pins carefully after soldering for shorts between adjacent "wrapped" wires. 73, Wayne N6KR Andy Anderson wrote: > > K2 #1918 is going together FB. In fact, you really don't HAVE to 'wrap' them, but it will provide a bit better mechanical connection (over and above the soldering). Here's How I did mine: I straightened out the full length of the tinned copper wire that Elecraft supplied. I then made a fairly tight 180-degree in one end, about 3/4" in from the tip. This gave me a "U" at one end of thw wire which I slipped over one of the pins on the pot. I then held the longer end of the wire steady against the body of the pot and with a pair of medical hemostats (a needlenosed plier would work, too), I grabbed the 3/$" end and, pulling the wire snug against the pin) proceeded to take 2-3 wraps around the pin. The wrap won't be as tight a a wire-wrapped connection, but it doesn't HAVE to be either... you're trying to obtain a good mechanical connection rather than a gas-proof electrical connection. You could also merely use your fingers do the wrapping. Clip ends to length and solder. 73 - Tom Hammond N0SS +++++++++++++++++ Date: Sat, 12 Oct 2002 20:51:33 -0500 To: From: Vance Huntsinger Subject: Re: [Elecraft] encoder not working! Phil, I had the same symptom with my K2. I thought at first that I had a bad encoder, but it turned out that I had broken one of the encoder leads, apparently due to flexing during installation. A touch of the soldering iron cured the problem. I hope your problem is that simple. Good luck! Vance-WA9YDJ At 06:59 PM 10/12/02 , PhilipSouthwart wrote: >Hi, >Got to the first tests on the k2.
