The program called mIRC (http://www.mirc.com/) is free and there are numerous free chat servers. All you have to do is fire up mIRC and join the Elecraft room. This makes it much easier to exchange detailed information since the speed is much greater than CW and there is no QRM or QRN to contend with. Everyone in the world has a very high signal to noise ratio anytime of day. It's possible to help with real-time trouble shooting, either in the main chatroom or in a private room one-on-one. For serious infomation exchange, IRC is a whole lot better than radio. It's also fun to just have a general round table discussion. Everyone can copy 100% and there are fewer propogation (server) problems. 73/ Bob - AG5Q ++++++++++++++++++ From: "Bob - AG5Q" To: Subject: Re: [Elecraft] ELECRAFT - Chat Date: Mon, 7 Apr 2003 17:43:42 -0500 If anyone wants to try out IRC, go to the server named: 4-irc and /join Elecraft. Unless the server operator authorizes a robot, there won't be a channel unless the operator sets one up, or someone joins(creates the channel). I remember the first days when we discussed this we were more than 5 or 6 oms at a time. So for everyone who is interested all you need is an IRC chat programme, like mirc, which is a very common software and easily to download! After installation connect the INFOMATRIX network, and step into #Elecraft. If it does not exist, create it and maybe someone will also join it. Last evening I met Bole 9A3RR who was absolutely lonely there. So be patient when this possibility of communication gets more common it will be a good chance to meet Elecrafters. Your instructions make the assumption that the user is connected to the appropriate IRC server or network. Please give some DETAILS as to which IRC server or network the #elecraft channel has been created on. Some of us don't use Mickeysoft or Mac-in-trash software and thus, we already have other IRC clients that will not come preloaded the default list of IRC servers that mIRC does. 73, John - K4WTF +++++++++++++++ From: "n3drk" To: "elecraft" Date: Sat, 24 May 2003 20:48:42 -0400 Subject: [Elecraft] Elecraft IRC Channel Information The Elecraft IRC Channel is located on WorldIRC. To use it, you need to access a worldirc.org server either through their webpage http://www.worldirc.org/webchat.php or by downloading a software package such as mIRC (see list on http://www.worldirc.org/software.php). Any of the servers in worldirc are linked, but they don't all seem to be up. Some of the server names and aliases that work are: irc.radiochat.org, irc.worldirc.org, and Klagenfurt.AT.EU.WorldIRC.Org. The complete list is on http://www.worldirc.org/servers.php. Note that every IRC network is disjoint, so the same channel name can exist in DALNET, UNDERNET, EFNET, etc.; but they're not the same. Use your call as your 'nick' and login, then /join #elecraft. You can also join #cqdx and #frc (not recommended for YCCC - hi). Although many IRC channels are vulgar, this one's not. Please follow the same rules for chatting, that you would use when posting to this list. There is usually a control operator for the channel monitoring things, and inappropriate language is likely to result in a kick and ban. John N3DRK, Pieter G0BSK, and myself hope you will find the channel useful in finding other elecraft owners for QSO-ing.
