For some time we've suggested 28.715 MHz as a place for informal Elecraft discussion, QSOs, etc. But 10 meters isn't open all that often, so perhaps we should pick something a bit lower. 15 meters seems like a good choice. It's a great band for both nationwide and DX contacts, and has a very large SSB segment. (An SSB frequency is preferred since you can call in CW or SSB.) International traffic nets and DX "watering holes" should be avoided, but I think we should stay above 21.300. Other bands are possible, too, but have some disadvantages. 12 m and 17 m have very narrow SSB segments, and gain antennas on these bands are less common. 20 meters can be very crowded, tending towards higher average power levels. A lot of K2 owners run 10 watts or less. Of course K1 owners and CW buffs in general will find lots of Elecraft rigs on the standard QRP CW frequencies. There are also QRP SSB frequencies, although these seem to have less activity. (Out of courtesy to QRP ops, you should always use low power on these frequencies.) So: Any suggestions for a calling frequency on 15 meters? How about 21.360 MHz? I'll be listening there, just in case ;) 73, Wayne N6KR +++++++++++++++ Date: Fri, 20 Sep 2002 09:28:59 -0700 From: Wayne Burdick Organization: Elecraft To: Elecraft Subject: [Elecraft] Re: new Elecraft calling freq on 15 meters? I have a horrendous local noise source (probably a wireless modem) at 18.125. I'm probably not the only one. What say we buck the trend towards frequencies divisible by 5, and go with: 18.132 21.332 We can always call and then move off somewhere else. Which should be primary? I haven't even thought about it since getting my K2 up and running with the AF, NB, tuner and battery. I also am a 98% CW operator and I doubt any of you have ever worked me on SSB. I am not even sure were the mike is for the Kenwood. And I just bought a 3 element WARC beam. I have never operated on WARC so that could be fun on CW and SSB. I hope to have it up 40 feet Sunday fed with 7/8 inch Heliax left over from my satellite days. I hope to work a ton of you on the WARC bands. 73, Jim, AL7FS Wayne Burdick wrote: go with: > 18.132 > 21.332 +++++++++++++++++++ Date: Fri, 20 Sep 2002 15:10:30 -0700 From: Wayne Burdick Organization: Elecraft To: Elecraft Subject: [Elecraft] 18.132 and new antenna I just put up a dipole for 17 m, much farther from the AC power lines than my present random-wire. The noise level went down 1 to 2 S-units, and I'm hearing lots of EU stations. I'll be listening on 18.132 for the rest of the afternoon here. 73, Wayne N6KR ++++++++++++++++ To: elecraft at mailman.qth.net Date: Fri, 20 Sep 2002 22:17:54 +0000 From: k6iii at juno.com Subject: [Elecraft] new Elecraft calling freq on 15m - 21360 Wayne, et al, Had two K2-to-K2 QSO's on the suggested 21360khz freq today with K5TW and G3PJT, everyone operating K2's. Added two new K2 serial numbers to my collection. Frequency seems to be a reasonable choice and pretty clear. 73 de Jerry/k6iii San Jose, CA +++++++++++++++++ Date: Mon, 07 Oct 2002 11:00:58 -0700 From: Wayne Burdick Organization: Elecraft To: Elecraft Subject: [Elecraft] Monitoring 18132 17 meters sounds great here today. Simply put - I propose that K2 operators (and K1's also) should call 2 kHz above the normal QRP frequencies. Call whenever you can. AND... just like the HFPack group - if you are on and don't hear anyone calling CQ, call CQ yourself. For operators in the U.S. the following Elecraft call frequencies will apply... 1812 3562/3712 7042/7112 10108 14062 18098 (QRM? de W1AW) 21062/21112 24908 28062/28112 "CQ CQ CQ ECFT DE AA0NI AA0NI K" Is someone already using the frequency? Then QSY within +/- 0.4 kHz of the call frequency. Most K1/K2's are probably set up to handle filtering as tight as 200 Hz, so it seems feasible that we could have 5 QSO's operating on or near the call frequency (e.g. 7041.6, 7041.8, 7042.0, 7042.2, 7042.4). I've chosen the 800 Hz bandwidth to comply with the widest filter setting of the K1. Any Elecraft owner should be able to sit on the call frequency with their filter set to 800+ Hz bandwidth and hear any call on or near the call frequency. In summary ========== No special times to call - call anytime. Call 2.0 kHz (+/- 0.4) above the normal QRP frequencies. Call "CQ ECFT". Exchange model and serial number. That's all there is to it. Have fun contacting other Elecraft owners! 72/73, Daniel/AA0NI ++++++++++++++
