I have, to date, not been able to run any of the ham radio software for "unix" on my BSD systems -- I've looked mostly at PSK-31 software myself. The main reason is that while I'm a BSD bigot, the lion's share of those who write "unix" ham software are linux bigots --- and they are not, as far as I can tell, interested in making *portable* code, just code that works. BSD and Linux differ enough at the low level interfaces (sound card, serial ports) that it takes a little doing to get the code so that it doesn't make assumptions about the system you're on, and take account of the differences. You could, with enough programming background and time, hack them up to work on BSD, but it is unlikely that many of the packages will compile and link "out of the box." The good news is that they're all open source, so you could, if so inclined, hack on them. I've heard gripes from folks in other forums that although you might feed back your hackage to the maintainers of the packages, odds are good that the next release will break them all again. -- Tom Russo KM5VY QRPL #1592 K2#398 http://www.swcp.com/~russo/ Tijeras, NM DM64ux SOC #236 ICQ#97201722 http://www.qsl.net/~km5vy/ If I can't make your day a little better, at least I can make it more surreal. -- Anmar Mirza +++++++++++++++++++ From: "Rod N0RC" To: "qrp-l" , Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Ham Radio SW for the Mac Qs Date: Fri, 28 Jun 2002 14:29:03 -0600 Folks, The shine on the lure has dulled considerably. First off the HAM software availability seems quite limited: The best I found was: http://www.ac6v.com/software.htm#MAC I heard no compelling reasons to want to use any of the Mac software available. Also, the new iBooks don't have a serial port, so rig control software is problematic. There are USB to Serial converters, but success with those seems mixed.(1) Finally, by the time I got Mac versions of all the other software I now use on the PC; (Firewall, Antivirus, text editor(2), quicken...etc) I'd be out another $500 or more. No thanks, I'll hold my current position for a while. 73, Rod N0RC (1) This is also a problem on some WinTel machines. I have a notebook computer like this. I use Digipan for PSK-31 and drive my rig in VOX mode, works great. (2) MS Notepad is not an editor, it is a TOY! TextPad www.textpad.com and NoteTab www.notetab.com/ are products worthy of the "text editor" label. (I'm an ex vi and Emacs "power user" ;-) Grab hold of jedit ( http://www.jedit.org ) and then you won't care so much what platform you're on....as far as editing is concerned. I've found no shortage of ham software for Linux, and I have a project going to write a rig-control program in Java. Of course vi, Emacs and firewalling are native to Linux. Antivirus hasn't been a big concern, although intrusion detection software abounds, and that tends to catch anything viral in the act. 73 de Maggie K3XS -- -----/___. _) Margaret Stephanie Leber / "The art of progress / ----/(, /| /| http://voicenet.com/~maggie / consists of preserving/ ---/ / | / | _ _ _ ` _AOPA 925383/ order amid change and / --/ ) / |/ |_(_(_(_/_(_/__(__(/_ FN20hd / change amid order." / -/ (_/ ' K3XS .-/ .-/ ARRL 39280 /___ --A.N.Whitehead ___/ /____ICQ 7161096_(_/_(_/__AMSAT 32844____/ +++++++++++++++++ Date: Sat, 29 Jun 2002 08:21:34 -0700 From: Timothy Gordish To: elecraft at mailman.qth.net Subject: [Elecraft] Mac OS and Amateur Radio I have been along time Mac user, but have not been to up on PSK and the latest modes and programs. I find that there is plenty of software available for older Macs including superior TCP/IP programs, and APRS. Although I haven't tried it yet, I bet the easiest answer would be to get an emulator program like those made by Connetrix http://www.connectix.com/. For Mac native software that includes PSK try Blackcat Software. http://www.blackcatsystems.com/ Tim Gordish Check out my homepage: +++++++++++++++++++
