PY8AZT/P - July 25-29'2002
Cotijuba Island
|
Callsign: PY8AZT/P |
July
25, 2002, the UDX Club staff departure to an adventure. We will be active
from Cotijuba Island (IOTA SA060) during 2002 IOTA Contest, and try
to push out SA060 from Most Wanted Group of IOTA Directory, or at least give
a chance for many island hunter get it.
Cotijuba Island is
located 2 hours away by boat from Belém. Early 20 century there was a prison
in the island. Dictatorship govern sent political prisoner to there,
intending isolate those revolutionaries ideas. After dictatorship, the
prison was deactivated, and Cotijuba was opened to tourism.
Located in Marajó Bay,
near Belém (Pará State, Northern Brazil), thus easy and fast access. Total
area is 60 square km and 15 km of beach almost untouched. This paradise
offer fresh water beaches, tropical fruits and several trials for hiking for
visitor entire year.
A
small inn, near beach,
was arranged to us. The site encircling lodge is large and flat. We spotted
couple trees during logistical trip. Agreeable place to stay few lazy days –
or attending a pile up.
Our effort is to
operate since July 26-29. This time, we will give special attention to CW
during IOTA Contest, and focus on SSB before and after contest days. The
callsign will be PY8AZT/P in 80m to 10m (except WARC). Our plan is to use a
vertical (R7) and wire loops and dipoles. Our concern is about power
generator; we are bringing a small generator that should bear our
transmitter (100w).
We expect good
propagation, easy piles ups, great fun. In addition, we hope learn a lot
about unusual conditions operation and try to figure out new challenges to
overcome.
See you on the log from
Cotijuba Island (SA060).

be sure we will receive it - the return will be thru Bureau too). We will
print QSL right after DXpedition, but it won't take long. As soon as we

Press Release
August 6, 2002 - Localization and QSL pressing
Where is Cotijuba Island? Cotijuba is here, Nothern Brazil, into Marajó Bay.
Our QSL is almost ready to go, see it:
July 30, 2002 - Mission Finished.
After 210 hours in the air, we went back to Belém bringing beyond all equipment more then 2000 QSO on the log. Even poor propagation conditions held in last days and thunderstorms in the beginning, we are satisfied with our first DXpedition. Thanks for all those ware patient in huge piles up formed when we show up on the air. We
took many photos and make a beautiful QSL from Cotijuba Island (IOTA SA-060). We will put our log on line, but it will take long, due 90% was made by hand (PC + Radio + DXpedition = QRM), so I’m logging all QSO on computer now. Sorry for those could not work us. Don’t be sad, we expect be there soon again. Who know during CQWW Contest!?!? QSL info is PT2PS or PY8AZT. Address are:
PT2PS - Philippe Schmitt SRES QUADRA 10 BLOCO G1 CASA 25 CRUZEIRO VELHO DISTRITO FEDERAL CEP 70645-070 BRAZIL
Or
PY8AZT - LUCIANO MOREIRA Trav. Quintino Bocaiúva, 1574 Ap 005 66035-190 BELEM, PA BRAZIL
Or even by BURO. In this case, write on the QSL “VIA PY8 BURO”
July 25, 2002 – All ready to go!
We are departing toward Cotijuba, bringing all stuffs needed
to a successful DXpedition. We expect show up on the air about 0000Z on July
26. The station callsign PY8AZT/P will be used on SSB and CW, including
contest period. Please, help me manage the piles up. Thanks for all help
from PY8MD, PY8ALI, PY8DAN – They could not there, but gave all help to
accomplish this operation. See you from Cotijuba.

- Power Supply and antennas.
Last night we had a meeting with the DXpedition Crew. Confirmed to be at
Cotijuba Luc-PY8AZT (CW & SSB Operator), Fernando-PY8FML (Antennas’ Builder),
Maia-PY8ZE (Power Manager and Cook maker). In addiction, we acknowledge the
support from PY8MD that solved our power feed problems; he loaned two new
150Amp batteries. PY8FML will bring solar cells (35A/h each) to recharge
batteries in day hours. At night our inn has a generator for a couple hours.
We hope have enough power to run one radio 24h/days, even if we have to
reduce RF power sometimes. Thanks PY8DAN for the IC706, PY8ALI for battery
recharge. we got e-mail from Gou (JA1QXY) saying "I checked opening time between JA and your PY8 Area, but it is very dificult to decide the opening time. Following may be opening time from JA and YV land , and I believe that the same extention pass dierection to your area. Following are propagation chart of Radio Wave Research Laboratory in Japan."
