Floyd Martin, W4RW (SK)

Floyd E. Martin, W4RW, 93 of Sterling, Virginia died Wednesday, July 31, 2013 at Heritage Hall in Leesburg, Virginia. He was born to the late Floyd E. Martin, Sr. and Catherine Blackford Martin Anderson on January 17, 1920 in Des Moines, Iowa. After graduating high school in Olathe, Kansas, he served as a flight communications operator with the Army Air Corp during W.W. II. After the war, he continued as a radio operator for Trans World Airlines. In 1958, he transferred his skills to air traffic control and retired from the F.A.A. center in Leesburg, Virginia in the 1970’s.

Floyd was a life-long amateur radio operator earning his first call letters and station, under the guidance of his mentor Marshall Ensor, while still in high school. His ham radio antenna was a landmark along the Route 7 corridor.

He was a member os SPARC for as long an anyone could remember.  He was a highly skilled CW operator and his callsign was used as the club call during field day.
