BIESZCZADY NATIONAL PARK

  • Bieszczady National Park is the third largest national park in Poland. It is located in the far south-east, in Podkarpackie Voivodeship, at the borders with the Slovak Republic and Ukraine.
  • The area of the International UNESCO - MAB Biosfere Reserve "Eastern Carpathians" covers on the Polish part the Bieszczady National Park (29.100 ha), together with the two adjoining Protected Landscape Parks: "Dolina Sanu" and "Ci¶niańsko - Wetliński". On the Slovak side the Biosfere Reserve covers the Poloniny National Park (40.600 ha) and on Ukrainian side Uzhanski National Nature Park (39.200 ha).
  • Bieszczady National Park (BNP) protects areas of the medium Western Bieszczady, built of sedimentary rocks from the Cretaceous period. Parallel mountain ridges, separated by a wide valley are intersected by deep stream gorges with transverse rapids. In the highes parts of the mountains are erosion exposed picturesque rocky ridges surrounded by the fields of rock debris and bare boulder fields. Unique in Polish scale the Bieszczady ladscape has long mountain ranges with alpine meadows called "poloniny" on the top part and is represented in the BNP by the massive of Tarnica (1.346 m a.s.l.), Krzemień, Halicz, Bukowe Berdo and Kińczyk Bukowski peaks as well as Polonina Caryńska and Wetlińska ranges. Endemits plant species of BNP are: the Carpathian spurga (Euforia carpatica), White cow - wheat (Melampyrum saxosum), Wetlina oyster fungus (Pleurotus vetlinianus) and more... Extremaly interesting for both scientists and visitors are the animal species that compose the fauna of BNP. All Polish predatory animals including the Brown bear (Ursus arctos), European bison (Bison bonasus), Wolf (Canis lupus), Lynx (Lynx lynx), Wildcat (Felix silvestris), Badger (Meles meles), River otter (Lutra lutra) and Fox (Vulpes vulpes). Another curiosity among animals is the Aesculapian snake (Elaphne longissima). The Park is a paradise for birds: Golden eagles (Aquila chrysaetos), Peregrine falcon (Falco peregrinus), Lesser spotted eagles (Aquila pomarina), Short - toed eagles (Circaetus gallicus), Eagle owls (bubo bubo), Ural owls (Strix uralensis) and more...
  • Since 1952, being the less developed mountainous region of Poland, the Bieszczady Mountains were the paradise for enthusiasts of the so called "Bieszczady style of tourism" - using wildlife paths instead of marked trails, sleeping in tents or ruins of villages, carrying all equipment and food in backpacks across the wilderness. Although the Bieszczady are not as high as the Tatras, long distances between human settlements, lack of roads, wanton vegetation in summer and extremely hard weather conditions in winter limited acces only to the most experienced tourists. In BNP, the visitor may stay the night at one of eight hotels, shelters houses, there campings and four campsites - operated by the Polish Tourist Association (PTTK) or BNP concessionairs. Camping outside appointed areas is not allowed. Car and bus acces is limited only to the public roads. Car parking is permitted only in the marked parking places. Visitors are supposed to pay the entrance fee for each day on the BNP tourist trails. Hiking is allowed only on marked tourist trails and interpretive paths. Horse-back tourism is possible on specially designed trails, other than for hikers. Mountain biking is allowed only on public roads and some forest roads, they are prohibiten on trails in the mountains. There is only one small ski-lift in the Park, in Ustrzyki Górne. In general, cross-country skiing along tourist trails is more recommended in the park than down-hill skiing.
  • Some of the farm buildings are nowadays used by BNP for Hucul horse breeding and tourist service. The valley of Wołosate, incorporated by the BNP in 1991 requires restorative works.
  • Bieszczady National Park is composed of nine conservation units (forestries), BNP Scientific and Educational Center & Nature Museum in Ustrzyki Dolne, Ecologic Educational Club in Lutowiska and the BNP Head Office in Ustrzyki Górne.
