MC3361

RETORNAR

MC3361 (tks to David KM6BEG for the translation)

The IC is used in narrow band FM RX in 49MHz wireless phones (max. freq. 60MHz). It has some interesting internal parts worthy of study. The MC3361 is easy to find in surplus, and can be purchased through Ebay and Amazon.

Look the datasheet

The first mixer is a Gilbert Cell mixer with an oscillator, not connected to the others parts. It is a NE602 equivalent, which may used to build a RX as in our example.

It has a operational amplifier, which is also not connected internally to other parts, that could be used as pre-amplifier or an active audio filter.

More ideas for it's use can be found on the web such as...

RX direct conversion

A similar IC, the MC3357, is used in commercial and ham VHF rigs. The MC3362 is also interesting, but it is hard to find in Brazil, and very expensive

RX 6m FM

RX 40m superheterodyne CW

To test the MC3361 mixer, we built a 40m DC RX.

We used the mixer and the Op-amp. it is possible to use the internal oscillator, but we already had a VXO on hand to use.

To build an oscillator using a MC3361, I think that pin 1 is the base and pin 2 is the emitter of a NPN transistor, connected as a Colpitts oscillator. The components values will be like other oscillators in the same frequency range (to calculate, use XL=XC between 40 and 80 Ohms). It is not necessary to connect external resistors.

Other kinds of front ends may be used. Look for values in other TRX on my WEB page.

To change the band, change the front end and the VFO, tuning both to same desired frequency. it is possible to build a RX for all HF bands including 6m.

Results

Sensitivity and selectivity are on par with other DC RX. We listened to DX stations (JA, K, ZL etc) in CW and some SSB (JA). We used an inverted “V” with the center height at 6m
