OSCILADOR OVERTONE

OVERTONE OSCILLATOR

- To generate signals in frequencies between 35 the 85 MHz.
- As main oscillator or beating oscillator.
- Replacement of canned oscillator (in some circuits).

This project is popular and oscillates very well with third overtone crystals, being able to generate signals in third and fifth harmonic.

Schematics

Components
The most important part is the crystal that can be:

- 14.318MHz Crystals from PC boards, they oscillate in 42.954MHz (90% of tested crystals oscillate).
- 24MHz Crystals in 48MHz (sixth harmonic), some remain in 24MHz.
- Crystals of 16. xxx MHz used in wireless phones (old band 40-50MHz), they oscillate between 48 and 51MHz.
- Crystals identified as 35 to 85MHz oscillate normally.
- Crystals of 18 MHz and 18. xx MHz oscillate in the third harmonic.

In frequency control oscillators with Huff Puff, the frequency of the VFO (and the main circuit) must be lower than of the used crystal, to prevent problems.

Assembly layout

Board with 15mm x 20mm islands in middle (4 and 3) are 10mm wide, by 5mm height, others 5 by 5 mm.

Adjustments

To adjust we have that to built this adapter, that rectifies the wave sine of the oscillator and becomes possible the measure with a voltmeter (analog or a digital).

Assembly layout

Adjustments

Adjust to 4V in the output at TP1 (measuring with an adapter and a voltmeter).
Measure the output frequency with a counter or frequency meter.
