Dennis Park Smith has been doing some traveling around California
lately and making good use of his new Allied A-2586.

   San Francisco, 43-MHz voice pager
Oakland, 35-MHz tone pager, ID every 30-min
   Sacramento, 35-MHz voice pager, ''Electro-Page''
Stockton, 35.58-MHz voice pager, KMD 377
Fresno, 35.22-MHz voice pager, KMD 342
   Bakersfield, 35.58-MHz tone pager
   Long Beach, 35.58-MHz voice pager
   ?, 35.22-MHz tone-voice pager, maybe in Ventura-Oxnard area
   Santa Barbara, 35.22-MHz tone-voice pager, KUA 300, 30-min ID's

Dennis also noted numerous unidentified tone pagers from the Los
Angeles-San Diego area. Reception in north CA ranged from 50 to 125
mile trop. A strange 4-kHz tone near 50 MHz noted during the day may
have been something of Stanford. Much 40-MHz repeater activity (most
likely military) in all parts of the state, FM voice and RTTY. Some
faint 35-MHz skip was noted but no ID's. Many 35-MHz region mobile
telephone stations were picked up. They simply ID by giving the city
at the conclusion of a call, e.g., ''Oakland off''.
Dennis finds that the tone pagers use tones resembling sine waves
(or something approaching what sound like square waves). KUA 300 uses
a two-tone pattern instead of the usual three.
