Subject: UHF:Get ready for next contest NOW!

The next contest weekend is for 13cm and up and I want to persuade all you
guys who have systems for 2304MHz  to get yourself a receive capability for
the other 13cm allocations as well so that you can work those countries who
cannot legally transmit on 2304 MHz. If you start now then in a months time
you will be ready.

To receive on 2320 if you already have a capability for 2304 is quite simple,
A 2304 signal entering your downconverter from the preamp at the feed will be
converted to,typically, 144 MHz at the IF port and then to your 2m receiver.
A 2320 MHz signal will produce an IF which is 16 MHz higher, 160 MHz. So all
you have to do is get a receive capability on 160 MHz. There are several ways
to do this, dig out the old 2m converter that you used long ago, change the
LO, get rid of the RF stage and feed it into a 28 MHz receiver, maybe you have
a receiver that tunes 160 MHz....or ... you can convert the 160 MHz back to
144 MHz by mixing it with a 16 MHz crystal oscillator...a catalogue item from
Newark-in-one and switch between the two 144 MHz ports.

Us 2320 guys do it in reverse....our 2304 signals come out at 128 MHz so I
made a simple  converter that brings that out at 14 MHz ( my station standard
IF... dont ask!) The advantage in doing it in the way I have described is that
you know exactly where the cross band signals will be ...16MHz difference low
or high. You could of course build or buy a second down converter...or a
second LO... but then how do you know exactly where 2320 MHz is?You dont have
any beacons to check up on... Well, by one of those happy coincidences  145MHz
times 16 = 2320MHz....so providing you know 145 MHz exactly you can feed a
tiny bit into a diode and put it near the 13cm converter input...sometimes
you dont even need to use a diode, there's sometimes a bit of 16th harmonic
about anyway. Check it by moving the 145 MHz signal by a known amount, say 5
KHz, and noting that the 2320 signal moves by 16 times this..80 kHz.

FAQ # 1...Will my 2304 feed horn work at 2320 MHz?...For the purposes of
receive YES, 16MHz difference in 2320 is negligible, 0.25%.
FAQ #2... Will the 2320 signals come through the RF filters in the
downconverter?... I did a poll some years ago and concluded that for all
the popular designs the answer is YES. In any case even if they are a few
dB down the skirt of the filter it will make a negligible difference to
performance...you have a wide preamp in front at the feed to establish the NF.
FAQ # 3...How do I know its working on 2320?... Do the freq check described
above and measure the sun noise, (or moon noise) on both channels. If the
sun noise is within a dB thats fine, if its a bigger difference its worth
trying to find out why.

Now, the JAs are on 2424 MHz and that does need a second down converter but
the satellite band of 2400-2402 is close by so a converter for that can be
used with the same concepts as above , 2424 is only 22 MHz above so again
it will come through the filters .
FAQ # 4 Will my feed horn work at 2424 MHz?....answer ...my VE4MA one seems
to work fine, Ive never measured it but the JAs are good signals with me.
FAQ # 5 How do I find 2424 MHz?... I dont have a good answer to this one but
I note that the 11th harmonic of the 220 MHz band might be useful. The JAs
may have a contribution to make on this one.
I hope this is of some help, it really is worth getting a 3 band receive
capability on 13cm, may I encourage others to contribute their ideas and
experiences in this area so that we have a good turn out on 13cm in November.

Hi Joe,

how are you ?
Thanks for continuously sending Net News! I try to find new addresses in
there for the EME Directory..

Could you please change my EMail address in your distribution list
from [email protected]
to   [email protected] ?                                        @@@@@@@@

The first one (old) will be switched off in due course..

Hope everything's fine at your side,

Departing to a family reunion (christening of grandson) during the western
window on Saturday plus a 4 hour nap, left only 7 hours of operating time
during which I worked 44x26.
Despite the apogee signals were excellent. Taking their equipment into account,
SV1BTR, WA6PY and N2IQ certainly stood out. 2 "weakies" couldn't be identified
though they patiently continued to call (TNX!). The YYY-approach is still not
in everyone's mind. However, my brief participation was worthwhile because it
produced #809 UA3DJG and #810 LA9DL. I'm looking forward to spend more time
in December.

Subj:    [Moon-net] HB9Q contest results

Dear friends

Here the HB9Q results of October 9th and 10th 2004, ARRL EME Contest,
first leg:

We have worked a total of 175 stations and 85 multipliers on 3 bands
(144: 76x32, 432: 72x33, 1296: 27x20). For the detailed logs see our
band-pages at www.hb9q.ch. We enjoyed very much to be QRV and to work
many new initials.

On Sunday we had a hard time on 144 MHz due to static rain, so we lost a
lot of operating time. It was great to work many new initial on JT65b.
In December we will again be QRV CW and JT65B!

On 432 there was much less activity then last year (JW-DXpedition did
help to boost the activity). We were only QRV CW. In December we will be
QRV in JT also!

We spent only a couple hours on 1296, using CW only.

Many thanks to all QSOing us and we apologize to those we could not
work, please call us in December!

Next activity:
November 7th 2004:

We will be QRV for a couple hours on Sunday on 144 and 432 (CW and JT).
We will advice about exact time and mode the week before.

December 4th and 5th 2004:
We will participate at the ARRL EME Contest second leg being QRV as
follows:

144 MHz:
December 4th from 00.00z until 12.00z
December 4th from 23.00z until December 5th 12.15z
Look for us on 144.040 CW + QRM (we move up) and on 144.130 JT65B + QRM.

432 MHz:
December 4th from 00.00z until 12.00z
December 4th from 23.00z until December 5th 12.15z
The frequency will be 432.020 + QRM (moving up) for CW. In will also be
QRV JT44 look for us on 432.060 +- QRM.

1296 MHz:
Depending on 432 activity we may also be QRV on 1296 MHz CW. Please look
for us around 1296.016 (in case of QRM we move up).

We hope to work many of you this coming 2 month!

        is dissassmebled.. [$18000???] It is a Collins .. a solid 10.3 meter
dish.. look on ND2X website for amp info.. what are the comments on
        Septum feeds..

W2UHI:  no net traffic.. comments for AD5RY on progression into 23cm EME..

NU7Z:   Rick suggests going to local TV stations for a dish .. can send pix
of hydraulics.. [email protected].. checking oht 13cm gear and found some
        problems with IF system..

N2IQ:   Mark reports that K1FO 28' Kennedy and mount for sale. looking forward
to next leg of contest.. may be on 23cm in Dec leg of contest and be
        on 70cm part time..

        process of repair..

DF3RU:  was active on contest.. lots of problems on 23cm.. 30x? on 70cm.. only
about 10 contacts on 23cm.. very busy at QRL.. one contact on 2 meters
with IK3MOC.. 200w one yagi.. maybe QRV on 13cm at end of Oct.. 30W
        6 mtr dish..

N7KA:   slow moving.. not much progress.. K0YW has DEMI xvtr and checking it..

WA0WPJ: not much.. just listening..
