Subj:    UHF 23cm big trouble, please read uhf'ers
Date:   2/25/01 8:25:52 PM Eastern Standard Time
From:   [email protected] (Sergio Bergonti)
To:     [email protected], [email protected]

Hello all,
I am sorry to announce that I may be off EME on 23cm for a while.
How long the while will be is undeterminable. The reason is that someone
has activated a FM-TV transmitter for sourveillance purposes at 1295.7 MHz.
Being an ATV-er too I can see a nice building on my monitor instead of the
signals bouncing off the moon.... Even if this illegal tx it is located
30Km away from my station, I am on a top of a hill and the signal comes in
very strong. 1296 Mhz for me are now s 9+20 noise almost wherever I turn
the knob and the antenna. I do not how long and if I will be able to get
back to normality.   I don't need to tell you how pissed off I am... sorry
for my bad English.  One thing I certainly know, the next 'tool' I may need
to buy is not a radio but a Remington rifle with Bausch and Lomb lens... F...

Regarding the next SW weekend I would like to leave the guys I have the
skeds with, free.  I have no hope to be able to get rid of this problem in
such a short time.
Talking about WA4NJP and WA1JOF, sorry guys next time.

Will keep you all posted on progresses...

Sigh, 73 de IK2MMB

hello Joe
its a long time since my last EME rprt to the net and the NL.
I am still alive, though, but there was little chance timewise to be on the
moon.
In the ARRL contest only the second weekend was possible to participate and
the ssb contest was not possible either. Will improve my presence, promised!
Systems seem to work fine, so immediate restart is provided. I am still
following up with the 32m dish project, time is working for me there, hi..
Furthermore I am in the process of acquiring an Alphut with 10000 trees ,  a
place to relax between eme and business..
Thats it for the moment, will be in Canada heli skiing for the coming two
weeks.

Hi Joe,
After returning from AK last Oct, became heavily involved (15+ hrs/day, 7 days/wk) in a new restaurant here.  That is now over and am departing 5 Mar for a 3-5 year position as Manager, Windjammer Cruises Maui.  I will return to HP twice a year for 6 weeks at a time, but as the present home QTH is being relinquished, no idea when might get QRV again here during the next few years.  After the period in KH6, will return and establish a new home in HP.  Thereafter, hope to get back on EME in earnest - maybe from a real retirement HI.
This e-mail will cease as of 5 Mar.  The [email protected] will continue; but, is damn near useless to me with the 100's of BS msgs that come into it.
Have established a new one, that intend to use only for amateur radio and family:
[email protected].
Probably sometime after May will get some small HF capability.  Ergo, hope to see some at times on HF as KH6/KG6UH.
Warm 73 to all and good EMEing.

To: All 1296 EMEers

PLEASE NOTE the SETI League test station will be operating on 1296.000
(note 1296.001 -- this was a typo!!!)  Please keep this frequency clear.

Sorry for the error.

The SETI League with be conducting a weak signal EME test with the
Arecibo radio observatory at the following times - see announcement
below:

Sunday 4 March 2001 22:56 UTC to Monday 5 March 2001 01:29 UTC
Monday 5 March 2001 23:54 UTC to Tuesday 6 March 2001 02:28 UTC
Friday 9 March 2001 02:46 UTC to Friday 9 March 2001 05:19 UTC
Saturday 10 March 2001 03:47 UTC to Saturday 10 March 2001 06:04 UTC

They will be operating on 1296.000.  Please keep off this frequency to
avoid interference with their signal.

EME transmissions between 1296.005 and 1296.010 are encouraged!

Your help will be appreciated.  Please pass the word on.  Sorry for the
late notice, but I just received this information.

73, Al - K2UYH

On numerous occasions over the years, the Arecibo radio observatory in
Puerto Rico has been QRV on EME, giving some of our smaller stations a
BIG
SIGNAL off the Moon.  Now, we have an interesting opportunity to turn
the
tables, and give the folks at Arecibo something interesting to listen
to.
The SETI Institute's Project Phoenix targeted search for
extraterrestrial
signals operates intermittently at Arecibo (in receive mode only).  They
have long used a weak microwave beacon on the Pioneer 10 spacecraft to
calibrate their receiving systems.  But Pioneer 10 is now beyond the
farthest fringes of the solar system, and its signal has not been heard
for
some time.  Thus, for next month's Project Phoenix observing run, 1296
MHz
EME stations have a chance to provide test signals for Arecibo.
The SETI League is hoping to have its EME beacon transmitter
(see
<http://www.setileague.org/press/pres0005.htm>) operating at 1296.000
MHz
during Moon transits of Arecibo, signing the club callsign W2ETI.  Other
amateur stations are encouraged to transmit test signals in the 1296.005
to
1296.010 MHz range, during those periods when the Moon is visible to
that
305-meter dish.  Here are the dates and times Arecibo will have a good
EME
window:

        Sunday 4 March 2001 22:56 UTC to Monday 5 March 2001 01:29 UTC
        Monday 5 March 2001 23:54 UTC to Tuesday 6 March 2001 02:28 UTC
        Friday 9 March 2001 02:46 UTC to Friday 9 March 2001 05:19 UTC
        Saturday 10 March 2001 03:47 UTC to Saturday 10 March 2001 06:04
UTC

Note that these are AOS and LOS times for Arecibo, at the limits of its
tracking range.  It is uncertain at what exact time Project Phoenix will
be
listening for our signals, so a good illumination of the Moon during
these
periods will be appreciated.  Remember that Arecibo will be in SWL mode
only for these tests, and will NOT be transmitting.  However, this
should
be a good opportunity for the EME community to make some random 1296
QSOs,
while providing helpful test signals to the scientific community.

Hi Joe, As you know, I'm missing the March weekend due to our helping
with the Science Olympiad for the Junior High kids that will be held in
Colorado Springs. I will be returning Monday, March 5. I will be QRV on
23 cm on the 5th @2100Z on the 6th @2220Z &the 7th @ 2330Z. I'm looking
for random qso's on .010 and elsewhere as activity develops.I should
have the TS-2000 operational on 1296 via the DEM transverter on 144 mhz
for the first time. Please also note that Perigee is Thursday the 8th,
so activity on the following weekend will also be good, but a little
late for Eu from this far west. Do any of our friends in the Pacific get
the net notes? Can they get active during the week? BTW, got a nice pair
of qsl's from HB9Q. My reply is in the mail. Also please pass on to EU
that I cannot count the QSO with DH9FAG that we discussed earlier. My
mistake, I didn't have his call correct...Libration did strange things
and put Karl in Slovenia!! Sorry, I would like to run with him again, so
I can make it official. Thanks for your help. 73 Bruce

Sorry that HF conditions arent too good to make contact directly.
Last night I also could hear K1FO making contact woth someone which I
could get his callsign.  Steve's signal sounded like he was in a barrel.
Also heard N9AB, but his signal was down too and he sounded like he was
in the same barrel with Steve.  I tried rotating the antenna for
polarity but couldn't get rid of the barrel sound.  Iv've noticed in the
past when we get these conditions up here, that if skeds were earkier,
we have a better chance.  I guess that living up here in the far north
has some advantages other thatn radio.

Did you find a ps-25 in your "small junk box" or did your friend have
one?  And how is the dish coming?

CU LATER
