The challenge: a super compact and autonomous APRS tracker - encoder !
 

I was looking for a small APRS encoder that would comply to following requirements:

• As small as possible
• Completely autonomous - only ONE cable to radio, no power cable, no cable to external GPS
• Universally compatible with standard DATA input 6 pin PS-2 plug (Like YAESU, ICOM, ...)
• To be used for portable activity or while mobile

The prototype -  proof of concept ...

• Dimensions only  75 x 55 x 15mm
• Internal GPS with SIRFIII Chipset offers high sensitivity (works even inside the house) and low power consumption
• One cable to radio, universally compatible with standard DATA input 6 pin PS-2 plug (Like YAESU, ICOM, ...)
• Using BYONICS TinyTrack SMT module
• Internal power regulator to 3.3v DC  (GPS power) and level converter to TinyTrack
• 2 config sets, can  be used for portable activity (ON7EQ-12, beacon every 30 sec) or while mobile  (ON7EQ-9, with smart beaconing )
• Internal batteries : 4x AAA high capacity NiMh  (8 hours of operation) Charging through DATA cable
