AO-10

OSCAR I, Amateur radio's first satellite, was launched
into orbit in December 1961. A small battery powered
box, OSCAR I continually transmitted the morse code
identifier HI to amateur receivers on earth until its battery
ran down. A tremendous achievement for amateur radio
in the early days of the space age, the succesful mission
was to be but the first of many.Yesterday's dreams are
today's reality ! Operating tips and information on how
to get started in talking to people on the amateur
satellites can be found here.I hope you take a few minutes
to peruse this satellite page and learn how to talk to other
hams via satellites. You can also learn how to talk to astro
nauts and cosmonauts while they are in orbit. This page is your launch vehicle into the fascinating journey of amateur radio in space.

Enjoy your journey...Hope to hear you on the birds, Best 73 ON1CAU.

Amateur radio on the International Spacestation. (ARISS)

Since its first flight in 1983, ham radio has flown on more than two-dozen space shuttle missions.
Dozens of astronauts have used the Space Shuttle Amateur radio EXperiment, or SAREX , to talk to thousands of kids in school and their families on Earth while they were in orbit. They have pioneered space radio experimentation, including television and text messaging as well as voice communication.

Here are some of my favorite ISS information sources on the web

ARISS audio files

ARISS success! students enjoy space chat via ham radio.
On May 17, students from the Parkway central high school in Chesterfield took part in a fantastic opportunity to track and make contact with Astronout James Voss on the International Space Station.

Recording software via soundcard

Recording software via soundcards are ideal for recording from your tranceiver.Never miss any amateur satellite, ISS, Space Shuttle pass again.Recorder software can record anytime even when you are away. You can leave the computer on and connected to your transceiver at home while you are at the office or doing something else, later, you can listen the messages caught by your radio how many times you want.In this way you can quickly monitor suspicious channels and have all the "action" on your computer.

Vox recorder by Nino Porcino IZ8BLY.
Vox recorder is a windows utility wich allows recording sound from an audio source only when an audio signal is presents; its main purpose is to avoid the recording of the silence eventually present at the input.

Vox recorder is FREE ! Download it now from our server.
File Size: 188 Kb zip file

    Recall audiocapture recorder.
Add a voice-activated recorder to your computer. Recall runs in the background, and starts recording when is detected from the microphone input.Wav data segments may be timestamped.Controls are available for different sampling rates and resolutions, maximun file size, sound activation threshold, and real-time ACM sound file compression ,tray icon support.

Recall is Shareware ! Download it now from our server.
File Size: 423 Kb exe file

    Scanner recorder.
Scanner Recorder is a free audio recorder that is primarily designed to record speech. It has a VOX control that allows the user to save disk space when no sound is present in the signal.Since FM communications has such an effective squelch, the recorder works best with fm.HF ham bands and world band radio have such poor signal to noise ratio that the VOX gate on scanrec might not be very easy to set.

Scanner recorder is freeware ! Download it from our server.
File Size: 189 Kb zip file

    Loop Recorder.
Loop recorder for Windows 95, 98, NT and 2000 records audio data from your soundcard. The loop mode infinitely records up to a specified number of minutes in a continuous loop while scrolling the data.At any time during the recording, the current data can be previewed and files can be cut and saved as WAV or MP3 files.

Loop recorder is Shareware ! Download it from our server.

Weather Satellite Reception

The other real keen area of ham radio.I'am interested in is reception of weather satellite images from the satellites themselves. There are two different types of satellites sending information to the Earth.

Polar Orbitting:

The polar orbiter gets its name becouse it orbits the Earth several times a day,and thus pass over head at only certain times. This invariably requires patience or a prediction satellite tracking program to determine when the next or the best for your location will be.
There are many different satellites in this class but the most popular are the American NOAA and the Russian Meteor. The most popular frequency for monitoring weather satellites is between 136-138 Mhz.

Geostationary:

The geostationary satellites remain in a geosynchronous orbit above the same point of the Earth, and thus give pictures of the same spot ont the Earth 24 hours a day.Pictures are sent back to Earth of the same area at periodic intervals and these may then be used to create an animated sequence showing the weather patters. The frequency which the European Meteosat satellite transmits is around 1.7 Ghz and thus I use a 1.2 meter dish to receive the signal.
