_CUA THE USER INTERFACE

The user interface for the EEP software program is based on the IBM SAA/CUA
standard.

The user interface help is broken into two parts:

  _ @MENU[THE MENU SYSTEM]
  _ @DIALOG[!B. DIALOG BOXES]

_MENU THE MENU SYSTEM

The first line on the screen contains the menu bar. The menu bar lists all
of the menus that are available in the EEP software program.

A menu may be selected from the menu bar in any one of the following ways:

_ Press the <F10> key to enter the menu system, then use the LEFT and
RIGHT arrow keys to select the menu that you are interested in. Press
the <ENTER> key to display the menu.

_ Hold down the <ALT> key, then press the highlighted letter of the
menu that you wish to display.

Once the menu is displayed, use the UP and DOWN arrows to move to the
selection that you are interested in. You may alternatively press the
highlighed letter of the selection. Please note that the LEFT and RIGHT arrow
keys can still be used to move from one menu to another.

Use the <ESC> key to exit the menu system without making a selection.

Press the <F1> key to display help on the highlighted item.

Some of the more commonly used menu selections have a hot key assignment. This
means that instead of having to enter the menu system and make the selection
each time, you may alternatively just press the associated key. The hot key
assignments are displayed on the right side of the menu next to the selection.

In general, if a menu selection has a '...' after it, then it will bring up a
dialog box. If a selection has no symbol, then an immediate action will
occur.

_DIALOG DIALOG BOXES

A dialog box is a window that allows you to view, set or alter multiple
options.

A dialog box may contain any of the following field types:

    _ @STRING[TEXT FIELDS]
    _ @CHECKBOX[CHECK BOXES]
    _ @RADIO[RADIO BUTTONS]
    _ @LIST[LIST BOXES]
    _ @BUTTON[ACTION BUTTONS]

The <TAB> and <SHIFT TAB> keys are used to move from one field to another.

_HISTORY HISTORY LISTS

Many text fields (like the file field in the @FILE_PROMPT[standard file dialog box])
maintain history lists of the strings of text entered.

If a text field has a history list associated with it, the (_) character will
appear to the right of the field. To display the history list, press the DOWN
arrow key.

A history list is displayed as a @LIST[list box] containing the text entries. To
select one of the entries, move the cursor to the desired item and press the
<ENTER> key. The <ESC> key will exit the list without selecting an entry.

There is not always a unique history list for every text prompt. Instead,
some history lists are set up in groups. For example, the history list for
the LOAD FILE and SAVE AS commands are shared.

_STRING TEXT FIELDS

The following rules apply for text fields:

A. Usually there will be text already in the field, either as a default, or
the previous entry at that field.

B. If you simply start typing, without doing any editing (cursor movement or
deleting), then the default text will automatically be cleared out.

C. Pressing the LEFT or RIGHT arrow keys, <INS> or <DEL>, will be the field in
Edit mode, so that text may be inserted and deleted from the default text.

D. In Edit mode, the LEFT and RIGHT arrow keys may be used to move the cursor
back and forth in the text. The <END> key will take the cursor to the
end of the text. The <HOME> key will take the cursor to the start of the
    text.

E. The <DEL> key will delete the character under the cursor. The <BACKSPACE>
key will delete the character to the left of the cursor.

F. If the (_) character appears to the right of the field then a @HISTORY[history list]
is available for that field. To invoke the list press the DOWN arrow key.

_CHECKBOX CHECK BOXES

Check boxes allow you to turn options ON or OFF. A check box with an "X" in
it, indicates that option is ON. An empty box indicates that the option is
OFF.

Check boxes are normally displayed in groups. Any number of the options
within a group may be ON or OFF.

To toggle a check box option ON or OFF:

_ Use the <TAB> key to move to the field, select the option with the
UP and DOWN arrows, then press the <SPACEBAR>.

_ Hold down the <ALT> key and press the highlighted letter within the
       option you want to select.

_RADIO RADIO BUTTONS

Radio buttons are similar to @CHECKBOX[check boxes], except that one option in each group
may be selected. When you select an option in the group, the one that was
previously selected will become unselected.

To select a radio button:

_ Use the <TAB> key to move to the field, then select the option with the
       UP and DOWN arrows.

_ Hold down the <ALT> key and press the highlighted letter within the
       option you want to select.

_LIST LIST BOXES

A list box may contain an unlimited number of items, and will scroll to
accomodate them.

Use the UP and DOWN arrow keys to select the desired item. <HOME>, <END>,
<PGUP> and <PGDN> may also be used to quickly move to the desired item.

Once the item is highlighted, you may press the <TAB> key to move to the next
field.

^BThe Incremental Search Feature^b

Channel lists have an incremental search feature. This is especially useful on
some of the larger list boxes.

You can search for any item in the list box by simply typing from the
keyboard. For example, to select channel "100" from the channel table list,
you need to type <SPACE> <SPACE> 1 0 0.

Each letter you type will bring you closer to the item you want to select.
Many times only a few keystrokes of the search string need to be entered
before arriving at it.

_BUTTON ACTION BUTTONS

To select an action button, press the <TAB>key to move to the button, then
press the <SPACEBAR>. Alternatively, you may select a button by pressing
the key specified within the button.

Dialog boxes usually contain the following standard buttons:

    OK<ENTER>
    CANCEL<ESC>

If you choose OK, the options selected in the dialog box will be accepted. If
you choose CANCEL, no changes to the options will be made, and the dialog box
will disappear.

_FILE_PROMPT THE STANDARD FILE DIALOG BOX

When the standard file panel is first invoked it will appear as follows:

      OPEN FILE
      iFile: UNTITLED_  ++
      i                                                              ++

_CONFIRM CONFIRMATION DIALOG BOX

Following is a list of all the confirmation messages that can appear in the
EEP software program. When help is activated from a confirmation dialog box,
you should be automatically positioned at the correct confirmation message
in this chapter.

^BBlank Channel?^b

The "Blank Channel?" confirmation message appears whenever you attempt to
blank a channel that has data in it. This message is asking you to verify
whether you really want to blank the channel or not.

Blanking a channel means purging all of the data in it. The word blank is
used instead of delete, as delete implies removal; which would mean that all
other channels below it would move up by one channel. Blank channel does not
do this; it just cleans out the data.

When a channel is blank, it is not used by the radio. This means that the
channel will be skipped when you turn the channel selector knob.

To blank the channel, press the "Y" key, or select the YES @BUTTON[action button]. To
exit without blanking the channel, press "N", or select the NO @BUTTON[action button].

^BChannel Table Not Saved. Are You Sure?^b

The "Channel Table Not Saved" confirmation message appears whenever you select
an operation that will destroy the data in the channel table, and the channel
table has been modified, but not saved. Because the potential to loose data
exists, this message asks you to verify whether it is alright to loose the
data or not.

If it is alright to loose the data, press the "Y" key, or select the YES
@BUTTON[action button]. If you have started the operation by mistake, or would
like to save the channel table data before you continue, press the "N" key,
or select the NO @BUTTON[action button].

^BFile Exists. Overwrite?^b

The "File Exists" confirmation message appears whenever you try to save a
file, and the file already exists. If it is ok to overwrite the file on disk,
press the "Y" key, or select the YES @BUTTON[action button]. If you do not want to
overwrite the file, or would like to select a different filename, press the
"N" key, or select the NO @BUTTON[action button].

_COMMAND_LINE COMMAND LINE PARAMETERS

You may load a channel table file directly from the command line, by
specifing the chart table filename when you run the EEP software program.

For example, if you have a channel table file named "TABLE" in the current
directory, and you would like to load it when you run the EEP program,
enter the command:

    DRB1 TABLE

from the DOS prompt.

_PROGRAM RADIO PROGRAMMING OVERVIEW

To perform any radio functions, you must first have the radio on the EEPROM
Writer ERW-4.

^BTHE RADIO MUST BE OFF BEFORE INSTALLING IT ON THE ERW-4.^b

The steps involved to prepare the radio for programming / reading are as
follows:

1. Plug one end of the ERW-4 cable into the desired com port of the IBM PC.
2. Plug the other end of the ERW-4 cable into the speaker jack on the radio.
3. Turn the radio on.

You are now ready to use the Read and Write options from the @RADIO[Radio menu].

_PRINT PRINTING THE CHANNEL TABLE

The channel table files written by the EEP software program are stored in a
regular text file format.

This allows you to print them on a printer by using the DOS "PRINT" command.
For more information on the DOS "PRINT" command, consult you DOS manual.

NOTE: Because the channel table file uses some graphic characters, you will
need to select the IBM character set to print them. Consult your
      printer manual for more information.

The channel table file will still print if the IBM character set is not
      selected.

_TEXT_EDITOR USING A TEXT EDITOR FOR EDITING THE CHANNEL TABLE

The channel table files written by the EEP software program are stored in a
regular text file format. This allows these files to be read and edited with
a text editor.

This facility can be very helpful if you need to do some major rearrangement
of the channel table. For example, channels can be moved from one location
to another by simply copying the channel line, and altering the channel
number.

When channel tables are loaded in the EEP software package, extensive validity
checks are performed to make sure that the channel table is valid. If a
channel is not valid, you will be notified as to which channel (actually line)
had the problem, and what the problem was.

Please note that blank channels are not stored in the channel table files.

NOTE: You may find "column block operations" very useful if your text editor
supports them. Consult your text editor manual for more information
      on "column block operations".

__* INTRODUCTION TO THE HYPERTEXT HELP SYSTEM

_HYPERTEXT WHAT IS HYPERTEXT?

The written information most of us have had access to up until now has largely
been in linear form - one sequential thought following another in some logical
order, as in the case of books, newspapers, pamphlets, manuscripts etc.

The purpose of Hypertext, on the other hand, is to try to parallel more
closely the human thought process wherein the mind, when thinking about one
subject, often "goes off on a tangent" if you will, to investigate a related
item. No matter how many subsequent, different items the mind is drawn to
(even if the last item has no relation whatsoever to the first), it can return
to the original subject matter.

Hypertext produces a similar effect through a network of help screens - each
of which contains information on a single subject, but is linked to and can be
accessed by, other subjects within the help system.

_DEF HYPERTEXT HELP DEFINITIONS

^BCHAPTER^b: The help screen or screens for a topic or subject.

^BLINK^b: The contrasted topic name within a help chapter
which, when selected, will display help for the
              topic it describes.
_OPERATION USING THE HYPERTEXT HELP SYSTEM

^BACCESSING THE HYPERTEXT HELP SYSTEM^b

The hypertext help system can be activated at any time by pressing the <F1>
key. Normally you will be presented with a table of contents, from which you can
can select the area of interest.

The hypertext help system is also context sensitive. This means that pressing
the <F1> key during an activity (such as selecting an item from a pull down
menu), will display help associated with that operation.

^BMOVING THROUGH A HELP SCREEN (CHAPTER)^b

If the help for a subject is longer that one screen, a scroll bar will appear
on the right size of the screen to indicate that more text is available. You
may scroll through the text line at a time by using the UP and DOWN arrow
keys, or page at a time by pressing the <PGUP> and <PGDN> keys.

Because help may be larger than one screen, a help subject is referred to as
a chapter.

^BMOVING TO OTHER CHAPTERS THROUGH HYPERTEXT LINKS^b

When a help @DEF%CHAPTER[chapter] is displayed, you may notice that some phrases of text
appear in a contrasting text color. These phrases indicate @HYPERTEXT[hypertext] @DEF%LINK[links]
(other topics) that are available.

If you see a @DEF%LINK[link] of interest while you are reading through the @DEF%CHAPTER[chapter],
you may investigate it by moving the highlight bar to the @DEF%LINK[link] with the arrow
keys, then press the <ENTER> key. The new help @DEF%CHAPTER[chapter] will be displayed.

You can continue to select @DEF%LINK[links] and move through the help system, ranging as
far as you like. The <BACKSPACE> key can be used to retrace your steps,
@DEF%CHAPTER[chapter] by @DEF%CHAPTER[chapter], all the way back to the original subject.

When you have finished with the @HYPERTEXT[Hypertext] Help System, press the <ESC> key.
You will be returned to the point from which you originally requested help.
