Just a few moments after everyone in Austria was celebrating new-year I hit the airwaves on the 1st of January 2001 signing OE75OHO. Everyone was curious about the meaning of "75" in my callsign!

Now I am going to disclose the secret:

The ÖVSV 75 Award

  • This special award is issued by the ÖVSV - the Austrian Amateurradio Society.
  • The ÖVSV is celebrating it�s 75th anniversary in 2001 (1926 - 2001).
  • All Austrian radio amateurs are allowed to use the special callsign OE75 (e.g. OE75OHO) between January 1st 2001, 00:00 UTC, and December 31st 2001, 23:59 UTC.
  • Austrian Stations need 75 QSO
  • European Stations need 50 QSO
  • and DX Stations need 25 QSO.
  • Same regulations for SWLs.
  • All modes and bands are valid - except contacts via terrestrial repeaters.
  • Send your application to:
    ÖVSV HQ, Award Manager, Eisvogelgasse 4/1, A-1060 VIENNA, Austria, Europe.
    (Attention: New address! Only this one is valid after 1st Jan. 2001!)
  • Costs: EUR 8,- / US$ 10,- / 10 IRCs

OE5OHO/Y2K


Y2K means "Year Twothousand" and should be familiar to all computer users - just remember the press coverage during the last months of 1999 - the famous "millennium bug" and the fear of computercrashes all over the world.

There have been a lot of different prefixes from a couple of DXCCs on the air during the year 2000 - all were in some way related to the millenium (remember OE2OOO? Operated by OE5NNN).

Of course the Y2K-appendix dealt also with the year 2000. I didn�t really use it until December 2000. No wonder everyone was trying to get into my log - EU and DX often rewarded me with nice pile-ups!
