In May/June 1999 we, Barbara
and Mike, visited the state of Guernsey,
part of the so called CHANNEL ISLANDS,
located between France and England.
|
Swiss Air and Crossair flights brought us and all our ham radio equipment
to this beautiful island. We rented an appartment in the north of the island.
Mrs. Lane on BUNKERS HILL in VALE offered a nice place to stay and also
a possibility for an antenna. Our brand new transceiver from YAESU,
model FT-100 mobile
covering HF, 50Mc, 144Mc and 433Mc in all modes did a very nice job! It
proofed to have a great receiver with good IMD and puts out a strong signal
with 100Watts utilizing DSP digital signal processing on transmit and receive.
During the flight I had studied the users manual and so the initial setup
was no problem and we were on the air the evening we had arrived. |

With our small rental car from Harlequin we toured around the green
island for one week, having great views from some picturesce cliff paths,
admiring the beautiful gardens and visiting most of the ancient monuments
or more recent sight seeing places. Because of narrow road system the speedlimit
is 35mph and driving is no stress with easy parking. You may travel from
one side to the other coast of Guernsey in abt. 30 minutes. |
Some places you should visit:
Castel
Cornet St. Peter Port
Fresia farm
Lihou island (only
at low tide )
Naval communication headquarter
Fermain Bay and The Ocean Steps
Bird garden and Butterfly farm
shipwreck museum
Little chapel and some German
bunkers
and many more, including some restaurants & shops.. |

|
During summer , along with the
Guernsey
Floral Show,
you may visit many private gardens for a small fee. Because of moderate
climate you will find unbelievable beautiful plants growing!
|
During our stay, we also met Jim and Mike, two local
Ham radio operators and we expierienced their great hospitality! After
just one week and about 200 QSO's on shortwave, we had to leave Guernsey,
but we will definitely come back some time. |
