This is version 2.5 of WinPix Pro.

If you purchased the program without a manual, go to the Help file and select the "Getting Started" item. Several topics will follow explaining the "Setup" process. You should print a copy of each of these topics and then follow the instructions.

A sample thumbnail library (Sample) and overlay library (Overlay) are included in the installation. These libraries assume an installation location of C:\WINPIX and WILL NOT operate properly if you install in a different directory. However, it is easy to correct this by creating New libraries overwriting the old.

HINT
Vertical text can be added by rotating the image CW; adding text in the usual manner; and then rotating the image back (CCW). When working with a large image, you can use the scroll bars to move to the portion of the image you want. If the gray box (text addition) is not visable, you may have to use the scroll bars to find it. For very large images, you may have to position the gray box; click on "Cancel" in the dialog box; scroll the image; and drag the box a second time.

IMPORTANT HINT
Remember that clicking on the "Clear" button in the Receive Dialog Box will clear a false start. If reception starts in the wrong mode or on noise simply click on the Clear button to reset the process. Minimize the probability of a false start by restricting the modes that will be recognized. Select the modes you use most often in the "Prefer" list.

SOUND CARD DRIVERS
An old sound card driver can cause occasional picture breakup. This is particularly true if you are running Windows 95 and are using an old Windows 3.1 driver. Check with your sound card manufacturer to obtain the latest driver software. If you are "on line" these can usually be downloaded.

DEFAULT IMAGE DIRECTORY
When you first run the program you should establish a default directory for the storage of images. Load any image using the File menu "Open" command and then use the File menu "Save As" command. Within the dialog box, you can select the directory and the image format ( file extension ). After the image is saved, the settings you used will also be recorded and will become the new default location and format for images saved by the "Save" command or the autosave function.

VBX CONFLICTS
VBX files are used by a number of commercial programs to add capabilities and enhance the appearance of Windows programs. These file are loaded into your WINDOWS/SYSTEM directory where any program can access them.
When Winpix Pro installs it checks the date (version) of these files before overwriting them to insure that it does not replace a newer file with an older one. We have encountered install programs that do not check dates and as a result it is always possible that a Windows program you install after WinPix Pro could replace one of these files with a version which is incompatable with WinPix Pro.
The usual symptom of such a problem is an error message at the time you bring down a dialog box in WinPix Pro. To verify the problem you can check the dates on the VBX files on the WinPix Pro disk against those in your WINDOWS/SYSTEM directory. If ANY of the three VBX files used by WinPix Pro in the WINDOWS/SYSTEM directory are older, just reinstall WinPix Pro.
Three VBX files are used by WinPix Pro. They are: THREED.VBX, SPIN.VBX, and MHSL200.VBX.

256 COLOR VIDEO
Since many of you have not been concerned with having High Color or True Color in Windows, make sure that you are not still running in 256 colors. Use the About box in the Help menu. It will tell you the video card's settings under Windows. Yes! It has happened to more than one of you and the pictures can be rather ugly in the 256 color mode.

SCOTTIE DX
If you transmit Scottie DX and the receiving station says his system triggered the AVT 188 mode it is not the fault of WinPix Pro. A VIS conflict exists and some systems must still force the selection of Scottie DX rather than rely on some automatic means of resolving the VIS conflict. Read the discussion in the manual for an explanation of the VIS conflict between the Scottie DX and AVT 188 modes.
