Makers Day

Another interest that is near and dear to the members of the South Plainfield Amateur Radio Club is passing on our knowledge to the next generation. Not only our knowledge about Amateur Radio operating and practices; but also our technical knowledge about electronics, construction and related subjects.  To that end, SPARC particpated in Makers Day at the Washington Library in Piscataway, NJ in March of 2018.

We purchased 20 Simple Code Practice Oscillators from the Four States QRP Group. We helped 20 young people learn about soldering techniques, component indentification, and following printed instructions (which sometimes isn't as easy as you would think!). In addition, we had an HF station set up as well as an "Introduction to Amateur Radio" video playing on the side, so that those not actively building could still learn a thing or two of what our hobby is all about.

Our ARRL Section Manager, Rob Roschewsk KA2PBT joined us for a very fun and rewarding day. We even made it into QST with a page devoted to SPARC titled "Meeting the Future Makers".

Buoyed by our success, we are already planning for Makers Day for 2019 and beyond. We would like to do the same thing on a smaller scale with local Boy and Girl Scout troops
