EILEEN RAYMER--- VICE-PRESIDENT
Ellsinore, Missouri
PURPOSE AND OBJECTIVES
The Raymer Family Association was formed in January, 1980 by Lloyd
M. Raymer. The aim and purpose of the association being; bringing all
Raymers closer together, to hold family reunions-when possible, and
to collect, compile and preserve Raymer family information. Our
newsletter Raymer Roots " is published twice yearly( January and July
).
EDITORIAL POLICY
Members are invited to contribute family material, which will be
used as space allows. Raymer Roots assumes no responsibility for
errors or fact or opinion made by contributors. Publishing only
reliable genealogical or historical information is our intent. Your
editor reserves the right to make the final decision when to publish
written material. Unless otherwise indicated, materials used in this
publication are from the files and research of the editor-Lloyd M.
Raymer.
FROM THE EDITORS DESK - A PROGRESS REPORT
The Raymer Family Association will soon be in its second year. I
hope all members have enjoyed our two newsletters of 1980, and look
forward to reading this issue as well as our Summer-1981 issue.
Perhaps someone has found that long-lost ancestor from the pages of
Raymer Roots. Or maybe someone has become more interested in
searching about their "roots". In either case, the troubles and
problems of publishing this newsletter are quite worthwhile. If
anyone has a certain problem in their Raymer research, or would
desire that a family tree lineage chart be drawn up, please feel free
to contact myself or the two vice-presidents listed above. At this
date, some 63 people receives the two newsletters for 1980. This does
not include the libraries nor the genealogical/historical societies
across this country that receive them. Only 20 people have renewed
their subscriptions-for 1981- so lets hurry and do so. This issue is
the biggest one yet! Our Raymer Family Association and Raymer Roots
are completely a non-profit making body. Not one cent is retained by
anyone. The dues are used to defray the cost of postage, supplies,
printing, advertising and other cost. A small amount is used for
research & purchasing printed material. So far, we are still in
the "black". So from Wilbur Westray, Eileen Raymer and myself, have a
MERRY CHRISTMAS and a very HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

LAND RECORDS:
Besides Fooy, Phillips, Mooney and D'Armond, there was the
following settlers widely separated from each other and almost cut
off from the world: in 1803 Ebenezer Fulsome took up ground on the
Mississippi River-about 3 miles above the mouth of the St. Francis
River, in the same year Moses Perry settled between the White &
St. Francis Rivers and William Bailey was south of the St. Francis on
Caney Creek, along the banks was Abraham Ramer, a settler of
1802. All lived near where Helena(Arkansas) now stands.

EARLY PIONEER SETTLERS:
Harrodsburg was the first permanent settlement (fort) in
Kentucky in 1774. In 1775, Daniel Boone settled Boonesboro. Soon
other forts or "stations" were built and this gave the pioneers
protection from the Indians. Two such forts in the area of Jefferson,
Hardin or Nelson Counties were - Severns Valley (near Elizabethtown),
and Nolynn. These settlements were started around 1779, thus they
were among the first in the entire western half of Kentucky. List of
names of the first settlers in Severns Valley, which is probably
nearly all who had located at this station down to about the first of
the-year 1785 and some who arrived-later". One of 44 men was

RAYMER FOLKLORE
Four miles above Bowling Green, on the River (Barren River)
is McFadins Old Station. Some anecdotes are connected with it. One of
which we relate: A clashing young Virginian came to the station, and
began his brag that he could out run any man in all Kaintuck.
McFadin, who was a quizzical old genius, inquired whether he would
run barefooted or shod, and was promptly answered barefoot. Let me
fix time and place, said McFadin, and I will risk a gallon of whiskey
& I'll find a man to beat you. The bet was made and the day
fixed. The old hunter Raymer was sent for. The parties
departed to the tract selected by McFadin. It was probably the most
Flinty bed in all the country. At the word the racers started. They
had gone but a few yards when the Virginian was compelled to hold up.
But as Raymer's feet were as hard as buffalo's, he kept ahead like a
quarterhorse, to the great amusement of old McFadin and his friends.
That ground has since been called "Reamer's Race Tract." The part of
Logan Co., Ky., which later became Warren Co., is here
represented by the McFadin's & Abraham Raymer, who is
mentioned as the fast runner in Finleys history.

RAYMER FOLKLORE
Around 1855 Abraham and Sarah (Johnson) Raymer and
their eight children left Grayson Co., Ky. and came to what is now
Carter Co., Missouri. They settled near Ellsinore, Mo. ( on property
where the Raymer cemetery is now located.) When the Civil War began,
Isaac(one of Abraham's sons) joined the Union forces. He fought in
the famous battle at Pilot Knob, and received a leg wound-for which
he received a $9 per month lifetime pension. One winter night in
1862-3, Abraham went to the barn to see what was disturbing the
livestock. He never returned. It is believed he was killed by
Southern sympathizers. His body was never found. Sarah lived to be
about 85 years old and was buried in the Raymer cemetery near
Ellsinore.

Clint Raymer
Clint Raymer was born in Butler Co., Kentucky on
September 20, 1894. His parents were Cord & Emma(Colburn) Raymer.
By the time Clint was 18 years old, he had already completed
elementary school, finished his studies at the Normal School in
MORGANTOWN and was teaching school at Dripping Springs. On June 12,
1915 he married Ida Ashley. Mr. Clint was a salesman for a hardware
firm for 12 years, and also ran a grocery store at Roundhill for some
time. In the late 1920's, he was elected State Representative for
Butler and Edmonson Counties. Around 1929 he bought a farm which
would later expand to over 1,000 acres. He became more involved in
agriculture over the years; as a county committeeman of A.A.A., and a
director of the Big Ready Watershed Conservation District. He was a
member of the Bethlehem Church of Christ and served as an elder. For
over a year he wrote a column in the Green River Republican
newspaper. Mr. Raymer passed away on Feb. 25, 1975, but he also
passed on to his children and family the great attributes of honesty,
kindness, helpfulness and virtue. He never failed to instill in the
minds of his children; Mable, Macon and Marlon the idea that they
attend school of higher education. All three children finished
Western Kentucky University. Mable became a teacher. Macon received a
Masters degree from the University of Kentucky and a county
supervisor for the Farmers Home Administration before his retirement.
Marlon also attended U.K. as well as the University of Pennsylvania
and is also a county supervisor of the F.H.A. Clint Raymer was an
outstanding man. He was a good citizen, active in the affairs of his
community, a family man and above all - a Christian. His example,
good deeds and influence remains with us.

Clifton Bradley Raymer(Cliff B.) was born on August 12,
1902 at Roundhill, in Butler County, Kentucky. He was the sixth of
fourteen children of Cord & Emma (Colburn) Raymer. After
completing elementary school in the local area and attending high
school in Brownsville, he taught at Hunts school (a one-room school)
around 1921. Later Mr. Raymer attended Western Kentucky Normal in
Bowling Green to better prepare himself to teach. After that, he
attended Bowling Green Business University to acquire various
business skills. In 1923 Cliff B. was employed as an office clerk for
the United States Government at the Woodbury (Ky.) Lock and Dam on
Green River. At Woodbury he met and married Theresa Gibbs. They were
married in Morgantown on April 19, 1924. Soon after this time, he was
transferred to Leavenworth, Indiana and even later he worked in
Louisville, Kentucky. While in Louisville, he attended law school at
night and did graduate from the Jefferson School of Law in 1933. For
most of the thirty-two years that Mr. Raymer worked for the U.S.
Corps of Engineers(U.S. Army), he spent the majority of his time as
an attorney for them. He was in charge of the Real Estate Division of
the Louisville office, a position in which he participated in the
promotion and accomplishment of many important civil and military
projects in Kentucky, Indiana, Illinois, Ohio, West Virginia and
Tennessee. Of these, two very important projects were those at the
Oak Ridge, Tennessee Atomic Plant, and the Wolf Creek Dam Project in
Russell Co., Ky. In 1952 he was cited by the Secretary of the Army
and the Chief of Army Engineers for outstanding service to the Corps.
After he retired from Government work, Mr. Raymer came to Bowling
Green and soon he and his son operated the Cliff B. Raymer Funeral
Home. He received his Kentucky Funeral Director's license in 1960. In
1964 he decided to practice law. By 1973 his law firm was Raymer
& Reynolds. The firm specialized in title and deed work. On May
24, 1975 tragedy struck. Cliff B. was killed by an unknown
assassin, as he tried to protect his home from being burglarized.
Cliff B. and Theresa had two children; Lota Adelle Lawson and Cliff
B. Jr. (who died in 1962). Mr. Raymer was well known as a kind,
honest and hard working man. He had a keen, sharp mind and was loved
and admired by all.

AMERICAN PLACE NAMES & TOWNS---RAYMER
NEW RAYMER, COLORADO
The Town of Raymer was named after George Raymer, Assistant
Chief Engineer of the Burlington & Missouri Railroad. The land
for the town(157 acres)was purchased and laid out in 1888 and it was
also settled that year. At one time, the town boasted a newspaper,
bank, grocery store, livery stable, saloon and hardware store. By
1894, many people were leaving town. The town was revitalized in 1915
due to the Homestead Act. In 1910, the town was changed to New
Raymer- so the name would not conflict with Ramah, Colorado". Today
New Raymer has a population of 80 and the railroad is now gone. The
area around the town is dry land with wheat farms and big cattle
ranches. New Raymer is located about 100 miles Northeast of Denver,
in a very flat & arid area of Colorado. (Source: History of
Raymer, Colorado by Franklin Jones(1943) p. 8&11, also the
recollections of Frank & Wilda Sweigard (both were born and
reared in that area), of 1533 Sixth, St. Greely, Colorado 80631).
RAMER, TENNESSEE
Several years before the Civil War, John Ramer gave a portion
of right-of-way to the Mobile & Ohio Railroad. When the station
was built, it was named for the donor of the land- Ramer's Station.
The town of Ramer, Tennessee (in McNairy Co.) celebrated its 100th
Anniversary on April 21, 1957. (Source: The West Tennessee Historical
Society Vol.11, p.137). Note- Ramer, Tennessee is located on Highway
