If Love Could Be Taught
If love could be taught
I'd buy you all the books,
And outline every chapter
And compel you to take notes.
And I'd prod you to excel
Because I've never doubted
Your capacity for learning and retaining.
If love could be taught
I'd abandon all my foolish
Academic aspirations
And devote full time and effort
To developing each lesson
And reviewing every question
For there's no sure path to knowledge strong as teaching.
If love could be taught
I'd know some day the lessons
Would be over, and the student
Would depart the institution
To share new-found skills with others.
I'd take pride in your achievements
As you marched in graduation.
You would leave to start a new life
Full of purpose and direction,
And I'd be content in knowing
That the lessons had been valued
And the student comprehending.
Then I'd wait for the arrival
Of the next semester's students . . .
But I cannot now, for I am not your teacher.
