A Secret Place

There's a secret place inside of me
Where you used to come
To be with me
And sing to me
And touch me with your soul.
There and only there
We communicated
Completely
And without words.

There's a secret place inside of you
Where I used to hide
From the world around me
And from myself.
It was warm there
And secure.
You took away my fear
Of dying
And of living.

But when secrets are betrayed
They lose all meaning.
When we let others in
To our secret places
We lock each other out.
You cannot sing here anymore.
I cannot hide there anymore.
And only when my life ends
You cannot hurt me anymore.
