Scrapbooks

I wonder if you save my words
For future generations.
Do you keep my poems in scrapbooks,
Or in a cedar box?
They never were intended
To be dragged about in public.
These are not the sort of musings
That the editors commission
For commercial publication.
They are written for your reading
And no more. There are no Xerox
Copies strewn about my office
Or in folders in a file.
Because these words are private
I'd just as soon you burned them
After reading every meaning,
After feeling every word.
Yet if you find my poems
A source of inspiration
Or an answer to your questions
Or the slightest source of hope,
And if you wish to save them
To be read again, in private
At some future time or venue,
Then you honor me no end.
