Love Poems by H. Paul Shuch, Ph.D.

A Man Is Only Half A Man

Where shadows cast their silent gloom
Across the stillness of a room
Wherein resides a man alone,
A thousand miles or more from home.
When windowpanes divert his gaze
From emptiness into the haze
Of memory, to a distant land -
A man is only half a man.

Where men of action occupy
Their minds by watching sparrows fly,
Afraid lest apathy descend
And bring all reason to an end.
When brief distractions must preside
To bridge the emptiness inside,
Where fervent prayer bespeaks command -
A man is only half a man.

Without the smile, the secret glance
That gives each day its new romance,
The touch, the sigh, the fragrant hair
That tell him that his love is there.
The lingering kiss, the long embrace,
That look of love upon her face -
Without his woman close at hand
A man is only half a man.
