Reluctant Goodbye
We mustn't be caught up in blaming
Each other or asking why.
I pray we can still avoid shaming
Ourselves when we say goodbye.
There's little to gain in pretending
Or trying to live a lie.
I'll strive for a gentle ending
And bid you a fond goodbye.
I know that you gave your love freely.
Believe me please, so did I.
And so there is no concealing
My sorrow at saying goodbye.
You'll never know how much you brought me,
Your smile can still make me cry.
Yet if there's one thing you've taught me
It's that there's a time for goodbye.
My demons may never be banished,
Although you were willing to try.
Before all the caring has vanished
It's better to say goodbye.
Your face and your touch I'll remember
With fondness until I die.
But my fire is too fierce for your ember
So forgive me, my love, and goodbye.
