There's a passage in Doctor Zhivago
Where the refugees read in the paper
That the Czar, and all of his family,
Have been shot. They ask "What's it all for?"
And Yurii endeavors to answer:
"It's to show that there's no going back."
That's evocative of your refusal
To consider alternative courses
Of action, or salvage the lifetime
Which you and I both valued highly.
You tell me "Once something has happened
You can never go back and start over."
And so you continue. No matter
That your new life proves disappointing,
Your new partner less than you'd hoped for.
So what if we love one another?
"My mind is made up. Don't confuse me
With facts," you say. And that is that.
Regardless of all of your feelings,
You must show there's no going back.
The one word you never dared mention,
Divorce, now becomes your sole option.
And still I refuse to forget you.
Your last, desperate action is shooting
The Czar, and all of his family.
I know now that I should never
Have married a literature major,
For you always loved the sad ending.
