Alone At Last

The big kids are outside playing,
The little ones sleeping fast.
So put down your book, take the phone off the hook,
I think we're alone at last.

Such moments are too infrequent.
The feelings we've both amassed
Must be fully expressed. We'll love to excess
When we are alone at last.

Ignore any interruption,
The hours are fleeting fast.
Let me sing you my song for however long
We remain here, alone at last.

To love is a daring gamble,
But now that the die is cast
I'll win or I'll lose with the woman I choose
To cherish, alone at last.

And are you anticipating
Recapturing glories past?
We've waited so long I fear I'll go wrong
When we are alone at last.

I never imagined finding
Your love in a world so vast.
The ways we have found, with billions around,
To still be alone at last!

A lifetime, it seems, I've known you.
How quickly the years have passed!
How could I have known our love would have grown
Each time we're alone at last?

And when the adventure's over
And finally I've breathed my last,
I want you to smile that it took me a while
To leave you alone at last.
