For years I have been striving
For the recognition, admiration,
Praise and adulation of my peers,
And the hope that my efforts
Would be valued by the world
Has been driving me to ever greater heights.

And now that I am holding
In my hand a plaque which many covet
Bearing words acknowledging my work,
Just the fact that my efforts
Have been valued by the world
Has been heady, and euphoric to be sure.

And yet there is a feeling
Of uneasiness, of incompleteness,
Longing for the one I left behind.
And I see that my efforts
Are for naught without the one
Who can drive me to distraction with her smile.

For years I have been striving
For the recognition, admiration,
Praise and adulation of my love.
The belief that my caring
Can be valued and returned
Is propelling me to ever greater heights.
