July Fourth Rebound
When in the course of human events
You find yourself bound to a spouse who resents
Fulfilling your needs as abusive and cruel,
Who feels trapped in your arms, it would take quite a fool
To prolong the unhappiness. Better by far
To declare independence than stay where you are.
When in the course of human events
There comes a companion whose smile represents
The fulfillment of all of your hopes and your dreams,
Who makes you feel totally loved, then it seems
Entirely proper to seek a new life
Together forever, as husband and wife.
And when in the course of human events
You find both are true, does it not make good sense
To trade one for the other? The logic is sound
Though friends may decry it as foolish rebound.
You may listen to reason, but choose not to hear,
For life is too short, and love is too dear.
