Green Stamps
Lyrics: first verse and chorus anon. (but apparently not by
Alan Sherman or Smothers Brothers, as some have suggested)

remaining lyrics © 2006 by Dr. H. Paul Shuch
sung to the tune of "Greensleves," trad.

I met my love in a grocery shop
Selling pickles and bagels and bottles of pop.
She tried to sell me asparagus tips,
And I fell at once for her ruby red lips.

Chorus:

Green stamps are what she gave,
So green stamps are what I took.
Green stamps are what I save,
So I pasted them into my green stamp book.

I kept on shopping there many a year.
Though I needed the groceries, my motive was clear.
I really just wanted to see her, so
My collection of green stamps began to grow.

Chorus

One day, as I was completing a page,
She said, "discount coupons are all the rage."
And then she cooed in a voice so sweet,
"I think soon green stamps will be obsolete."

Chorus

I took my books to the S&H Store,
And was shocked to see it was there no more.
Though all my green stamps are worthless now,
I remember my checkout clerk anyhow.

Chorus
