“High Desert's National Solar Tour”

With the news talking about energy shortages and the high prices of gas and heating oil as a result of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, this year’s local “National Solar Tour” (sponsored by the American Solar Energy Society) promises to be a very informative and interesting event!

The High Desert’s “National Solar Tour” will begin in Phelan, CA at the Blessed Junipero Serra Church where the congregation puts their faith in God and their money in solar.  There is a 20 kW solar photovoltaic system on their roof.  In the church’s parking lot, there will be a static display of electrical appliances and vehicles.  The vehicle display will include a factory-made, all-electric Chevy S-10 pick-up truck (one of only a handful not crushed), an all-electric pick-up truck conversion, and a 2004 Toyota Prius (with over 48 thousand miles on it) that has been getting over 45 mpg for most fill-ups!

At 10:00 a.m. (in the church’s classroom), Ted Schultz, the organizer of this local “National Solar Tour” AND the owner of the largest residential hybrid (solar/wind) system in the High Desert, will be giving a PowerPoint presentation entitled, “What Energy Crisis?  The Saga Continues”.  This presentation will show that the High Desert can easily be thought of as the “Saudi Arabia of Solar Energy”.  It will also show why California really needs to start using solar energy as soon as possible.

After the presentation at the church, a short tour of the 20 kilowatt system on their roof  will be conducted before people carpool (preferred due to a lack of parking) and/or drive individually up the hill to Wyndstone Manor. At Wyndstone Manor, a short tour of the largest residential hybrid solar/wind system in the High Desert will take place.  In addition to Wyndstone Manor, a couple of other businesses/residences with solar photovoltaic systems will be open during this year’s “National Solar Tour.”  Mountain Hardware in Wrightwood has a small solar photovoltaic system on its roof, and the Pascarello Residence in Apple Valley has a 9 kW solar photovoltaic system on the roof.  They also have a cute neighborhood electric vehicle (N.E.V.) for running around town.

The “Tour” will continue with a 1:00 p.m. tour of the biogas power system at the Meadowbrook Dairy.  The tour will show how the Dairy produces 150 kilowatts of electricity from the methane that all of their cows produce!  The final presentation of the “Tour” will take place at the Mojave Desert Air Quality Management District office in Victorville where they have a large (77kW) system to cut their electric bill.  A presentation of a video entitled, “Kilowatt Ours” will be shown from 3:00 – 4:30 p.m. with a question and answer period afterwards.
