Neat Monitoring Trick No. 1

Monitoring Approach Control at Uncontrolled Airports

Circumstances:  An uncontrolled airport which has radar service provided by a nearby controlled airport. Because you're not at the larger airport, you can't hear the ground side of the Approach/Departure communications in and around the smaller airport.

Ray of Hope:  The uncontrolled airport has a remote radio outlet for the purpose of Clearance Delivery. Between uses, it simulcasts the Approach Control frequency that you want.

The Technique:  Scan between the actual Approach/Departure frequency and the remote Clearance frequency together with no scan delay. Aircraft in the air will use their normal frequency, and you'll hear Approach Control reply on the Clearance Frequency.
