25 DECEMBER 2002

A significant winter storm impacted the northeastern US on Christmas Day 2002. Even by New York standards it was noteworthy. A storm system from the midwest moved toward the northeast US and then re-formed in the Atlantic Ocean as a nor'easter. Here you can see a Christmas Eve satellite image (2:46pm) showing the storm system in the Atlantic, and there is even a fairly well-defined center of circulation. By late afternoon on Christmas Day 2002 some counties in central & eastern NY had either declared a state of emergency or initiated a travel ban--see the incredible listing here. Hardest hit were Herkimer County and Otsego County, NY...by the end of the record-setting storm, Little Falls, NY (Herkimer County) had received 36.0 inches, and Cherry Valley, NY (Otsego County) had received an unbelievable 39.0 inches. Among the other hardest hit areas of NY were Delaware County, NY where official readings ranged from 19.0 to 31.0 inches, and Albany County, NY where official readings ranged from 18.0 - 27.0 inches. An exhaustive listing of snowfall totals from this event can be seen here, covering CT, MA, NJ, NY, and VT. Another listing of snowfall totals, including a map, can be seen here for the Binghamton County Warning Area only. A meteorological case study of this event can be found here.
