*reception areas in the US, DC, Puerto Rico, US Virgin Islands
[map], and
American Samoa
[map]. The file is a zip file
which will unzip to a data file (stations.dat) which might be useful for a weather database
program or just to have nationwide info to peruse offline. Of course, you can later put the data
into a Microsoft Word document or any other text editor that can handle roughly a half a megabyte
of data. The last data update was May 27, 2012.
*A reception area (just my term for it)
is a section of a county that can receive signals from a particular 162 MHz transmitter.
There are almost always overlaps, which is when a radio can receive signals from multiple
transmitters. For example, Chenango County, NY has five reception areas, which means that five
transmitters provide signals for the county, so chances are that you will be able to hear at
least one transmitter no matter where you are in the county. If you are on a hilltop with a good
receiver and antenna, you may be able to hear all 5 and possibly others. The U.S. reached AHR
transmitter number
1,000 in
September 2008, and at that point over 98% of the US had coverage.
