DESCRIPTION

We arrived at the local FN22 hilltop location for a second year in a row, but this time we were better equipped. The 222 station was the same, but we had a bigger antenna system on 432 with about 6 more dB and we brought two more bands--902 and 1296. We did not need chat pages because we were going to keep calling CQ and turning the beams in every direction for the whole contest rather than wait for someone to tell us where the activity is. We also advertised our plans on the K1RZ database right after the CQ WW VHF Contest.

Contacts were going steadily into the log, and then in the second hour we got a clean sweep with K1TEO which was our confirmation that all four bands were working properly. We were happy to see it because the 902 station wasn't working in the June VHF Contest and today was our revenge on that bad luck. After averaging 6-7 QSOs per hour so far, we hit the "dinnertime doldrums" with a 2-hour period of no contacts at all from 5:30-7:30 PM local time. But the long wait was worth it because when it was over, we had our longest distance clean sweep: VE3ZV EN92vw (369.77 km / 231.105 mi). No digital modes needed for that one, either (not even CW). Best DX of the contest was worked near the beginning with N1JEZ FN44ar at 386.06 km / 241.29 miles, except we were unable to complete on 902 for some reason.

The next day we set back up as early as possible and the first contact went into the log at 8:53 local time. As others have said, the prediction for slightly enhanced conditions to the southeast never materialized even at our location near 2000' above sea level (and a few hundred feet above average terrain). The good news is that the easterly directions that we missed the previous day started to show up like someone opened a door. We even worked an FM simplex contact on 223.500 MHz with W1RGA/R who was 220.34 km / 137.715 miles away on Equinox Mountain, VT. We were also happy to pick up VE2DFO FN25 for our only station to the north (337.14 km / 210.711 miles). We found it strange that the 222/432 propagation was in such bad shape all weekend. The best DX on 222/432 was only 10 miles longer than the best DX on 902/1296.
