KSHE: ANALOG VS. DIGITAL

Since 1967, KSHE (94.7 MHz Crestwood, MO) has advertised itself as “Real Rock Radio”. It would serve them right to drop the “Real” from its name, since this station has converted to FAKE digital audio broadcasting. REAL audio broadcasting is ANALOG ONLY! There is practically no Stereo separation on the FM Stereo signal. Here’s the damage KSHE’s digital operation does to adjacent channels.

Frequency    Before KSHE converted to digital                                 After KSHE converted to digital

94.4 MHz       Clear                                                                                      Wiped out by KSHE digital sidebands

94.5 MHz       WLRW Champaign, IL (occasional reception)           Wiped out by KSHE digital sidebands

94.6 MHz       Analog sidebands from KSHE                                       Wiped out by KSHE digital sidebands

94.7 MHz       Center channel                                                                   Center channel

94.8 MHz       Analog sidebands from KSHE                                       Wiped out by KSHE digital sidebands

94.9 MHz       Analog sidebands from KSHE                                       Wiped out by KSHE digital sidebands

95.0 MHz       Clear                                                                                      Wiped out by KSHE digital sidebands

Now, why would Emmis want to waste their money on a technology that’s inferior? Especially using it on a radio station that has been broadcasting the same format for four decades? So-called “HD Radio” (which is really low-definition) ruins the experience of listening to rock radio. Sorry, KSHE, you’re no longer “Real Rock Radio,” but rather “Rock Radio in Fake Digital.”
