My first thought upon waking is not pleasure for the taking
(Though you please me more than any I have known),
Nor how it feels to hold you (although when my arms enfold you
You remind me that you're with me, and I'll never be alone.)
My first thought upon waking isn't how my loins are aching
(Although wanting you completely is a fact),
Not of how your mind can mold me or your gentle arms which hold me
But perhaps the way you think before you act.

Just to think of everything you do and say.

Could that first thought when I wake be the grudging give and take
Which torment so many husbands and their wives?
No. Instead I count the years we shall spend dispelling fears,

My first thought in the morning when I reach across with yearning
And discover you already holding me
Is the flowing warmth you're sending which continues without ending,
Exactly as our love was meant to be.
